  • PRESS RELEASE

The Italian Minister of Trade and European Affairs, Emma Bonino, has called for expanding economic cooperation between her country and Dubai through joint ventures in different fields.

Ms Bonino made the remarks during a meeting with Sultan Ahmad Bin Sulayem, Chairman, Dubai World.

Their talks covered the economic climate in Italy and emerging investment opportunities.

The Italian Minister of Trade and European Affairs, Emma Bonino, said: "Italy is seeking to strengthen its economic relations with the UAE and there are many investment opportunities available for Dubai World, especially in the field of developing and operating marine terminals in Italian ports. DP World is highly regarded around the world and we believe Italy could offer new opportunities for them.

"Other group companies of Dubai World may also find a highly favourable business environment in Italy in areas such as the development of holiday resorts because Italy's Mediterranean coasts are still in need for this type of investment.

"The Italian real estate sector is also witnessing continuous growth and provides ample opportunities for Dubai World to expand its international investment portfolio. Italy enjoys a strategic geographical location and acts as a major gateway to the European continent.

"We look forward to cooperating with a large and diversified group like Dubai World and gain from their considerable experience and expertise."

Sultan Ahmad Bin Sulayem, Chairman, Dubai World, said: "Relations between the UAE and Italy have been solid and coherent for decades and there is dynamic business activity between Dubai and Rome. Dubai World seeks the best ties with Italy and we will not spare any effort to achieve full cooperation.

"Italy is undoubtedly a very important European station for us. Istithmar, Dubai World's subsidiary for foreign investment, will carry out extensive studies on several real estate projects in Italy, an important international tourist destination in its own right. Rome with its deep-rooted history is replete with historical landmarks.

"We will explore business opportunities in sectors like hospitality, tourism and mountain and coastal resorts.

"DP World is very interested in exploring the marine services opportunities available and the potential for operating and managing Italian ports and adding them to its international network."
