The North East of England is the most northerly county of England and has a distinctive regional identity and a strong sense of history. It is one of the smallest of the English regions in both size (8,592sq km) and population (2.6million) with more than half of its area being rural. In the last 20 years traditional industries such as heavy engineering, coal mining and shipbuilding have steadily declined while new hi-tech industries and tourism have flourished. Agriculture also remains a substantial industrial sector in the region. The growth of the service industry has seen some 100,000 jobs being created while the last five years have seen £280 million being invested in the regions telecommunications infrastructure.
Companies investigating the market are being invited to travel to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in November as part of a high profile British delegation to discover how they can grow their business and gain new customers.
Organised by UK Trade & Investment, the visit will not only help open up new opportunities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi but also provide useful networking links between the UK and other parts of the UAE.
Joyce Rawlings, UK Trade & Investment’s Middle East International Trade Adviser is experienced in travelling to and doing business in the Middle Eastern market and has an in-depth knowledge of the area’s business culture. Joyce, who will be accompanying the delegation, said:
”Dubai is now the UK’s 10th largest export market with UK exports rising 134 per cent in 2005 reaching a total value of £4.6 billion. With enormous construction and development taking place in various industries, Dubai has attracted world attention through real estate projects, sports events and conferences to mention just a few. ”
“Abu Dhabi – where delegates will have an option to stay on the visit – is the focal point of the oil and gas industry within the UAE and is also where all the major decisions are taken on utilities, notably power and water sectors. Like Dubai, Abu Dhabi is trying to diversify its economy and develop itself as a commercial centre, but with less emphasis on tourism.”
The market visit to the Middle East will take place from 11 to 16 November.
