Mall of the Emirates Grand Opening impresses mall industry jury

Mall of the Emirates, the world's first shopping resort was recently handed a Merit Award from the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) at a major conference in Chicago.

MAF Shopping Malls flagship project, had entered the Grand Opening/ Extension and Renovation category for malls over 1.4m sq feet in size. "To receive a Merit Award means that your entry must score highly in areas such as strategy, creativity and cost-effectiveness," said Fuad Sharaf, General Manager, Mall of the Emirates. "We are proud that Mall of the Emirates was the only mall from the Middle East to receive this award."

The MAXI awards were created in 1972 by ICSC. These awards recognise effective marketing programmes in shopping centres that add value to the bottom line in cost-effective and creative ways and submissions are welcomed from member malls in 80 countries across the globe.

"This year, Mall of the Emirates was competing with international companies from Canada and the USA. To win a Merit Award on an international platform is truly a great achievement for the Mall of the Emirates team,"


said Sharaf.

The Merit Award follows MAF Shopping Malls excellent success in 2005 where the group won 2 Maxis and 3 Merits, one of these Maxis was for the leasing strategy for Mall of the Emirates. Early this year, Mall of the Emirates was named the Most Innovative International Retail & Leisure Concept of the Year' and 'International Retail & Leisure Destination of the Year' at the RLI Global Awards 2006. It was also awarded Retail City's 'Mall of the Year' title.
