"Genzyme has spent 25 years building its global infrastructure. Establishing a regional base in Dubai, the technological and commercial hub of the Middle East, is an exciting occasion, as it will allow us to better understand and address the specific health care systems and business environments of the area,"
said Sandford Smith, Genzyme President, International Group.
The Dubai office will provide regional sales and marketing support to customers and distributors for its enzyme replacement treatments for Gaucher, MPS I, Fabry and Pompe, four Lysosomal Storage Diseases*. It will also support activities for Renagel, a treatment to reduce the phosphorus levels in chronic kidney disease patients on hemodialysis, Thymoglobulin, an immunosuppressant for treating and preventing acute rejection in renal transplant patients, and Thyrogen, an adjunct to thyroid cancer disease management designed to aid in the treatment and earlier detection of recurrence.
Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, UAE, was the first clinic in the Middle East to treat a Pompe patient with Genzyme's newly approved enzyme replacement therapy Myozyme®. In September, Myozyme earned the 2006 UK Prix Galien Gold Medal, a prestigious international award that honours outstanding achievement in pharmaceutical research and development in the United Kingdom.
"We are delighted to welcome Genzyme, the latest global company to join the DuBiotech community," said Dr. Abdulqader Al Khayat, Executive Director of DuBiotech. "Partnering with industry leaders like Genzyme will help build the region's biotechnology industry. Genzyme's presence will add considerable value to the DuBiotech community."
Genzyme in the Middle East
The Dubai office will represent Genzyme in Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, the Sultanate of Oman, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Further activities in Yemen, Syria and Sudan could be foreseen.
Initially, three full-time employees will be working out of the Dubai office, in addition to sales representatives in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Genzyme also anticipates adding staff for administrative, regulatory and customer service functions in the coming years. Ariaan Schipper will continue to serve as Genzyme's Regional Director for the Middle East from the Dubai office. "We are looking forward to expanding our services in the area so we can build a closer relationship with our stakeholders and so more patients with serious medical needs can benefit from our specialised therapies," said Schipper.
