The initiative comes as part of the ongoing National Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, launched on October first under the Ministry of Health, in conjunction with General Authority for Health Services for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (GAHS), the Department of Health and Medical Services, Dubai (DoHMS), Hoffmann-La Roche and GE Healthcare.
Mercato Mall in Dubai, as well as Abu Dhabi Mall and Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi, have all participated in the campaign by offering space for stands with educational material and leaflets until the end of November.
Scores of women visit malls in the UAE every day. 'The 'Shop and Learn' drive will allow women who visit the malls to get information about breast self-examination and the importance of early breast cancer detection,' explained Rima Khadra, Communications Manager, Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd.
'We hope this initiative will help spread awareness throughout the Emirates and encourage women over forty to book a mammogram at one of the free and discounted testing centres during the month of November.'
GE Healthcare has supported the drive by providing volunteers for the stands in Dubai to hand out information and assist with basic enquiries.
'We are very honoured to be a key partner in this National Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign,' said Isam Moursy, General Manager, GE Healthcare MEA. 'GE Healthcare is fully engaged in detecting breast cancer at the earliest stage and we are proud to help in educating women on the importance of early detection,' added Moursy.
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign will continue to run throughout November with several private hospitals across the Emirates offering discounts on mammography testing. In addition, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, and the National Centre for Early Detection in Abu Dhabi as well as the Maternal and Child Health Centre in Sharjah will all be offering free mammographies for local and expatriate women for the duration of the campaign.
A toll free line has been set up on 800 4537 to give information on locations and working hours for all the participating centres.
