About Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Moorfields was founded in 1804 and opened in 1805. It is the oldest and one of the largest centres for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in the world.

More patients in the UK go to Moorfields than to any other eye hospital or clinic because of its world-famous reputation. This is based on the expertise of its clinical staff and the cutting-edge research taking place on site. Over half the ophthalmologists practising in the UK, and many more overseas, have received specialist training at Moorfields.

Moorfields offers a comprehensive and seamless ophthalmic service that is internationally renowned. Complex ophthalmic cases (tertiary referrals) come to it from across the UK and further afield. In partnership with the Institute of Ophthalmology (part of University College London), Moorfields manages the largest ongoing ophthalmic research programme in the world.

All of this is only possible because of the unique combination of doctors, scientists and a variety of other clinicians, supported by state-of-the-art research at the Institute of Ophthalmology, that work together to provide a dedicated service.
