How Internet pioneers 'wrecked the web' - Dubai Forum guide to avoiding dead ends

  • United Arab Emirates: Sunday, September 08 - 2002 at 09:44
  • PRESS RELEASE

Middle East website developers must avoid the mistakes of the early Internet pioneers, an international expert urged yesterday.

"In the early 90s the World Wide Web was just beginning to take off and had a bright future ahead of it," said Kynn Bartlett, former President of the HTML Writers Guild and an executive member of the International Webmasters association. "Unfortunately much of this potential has been squandered by short-term thinking resulting in poor design and unrealistic goals."

He is a leading speaker at The 2nd Middle East Webmaster Forum in Dubai on the 26th 30th October, organised by the Institute for International Research.

Mr Bartlett added: "Website developers in the Middle East can learn a lot from our mistakes. And, hopefully avoid re-treading the dead-end paths, which even today are preventing the web from reaching its full potential."

Also on the Forum's international speaker faculty is Dr Daniel Dardailler, Director for European Operations of the World Wide Web Consortium, along with Internet experts from Jordan, USA, UK, Qatar, France, Ireland and the UAE.

In support of the event Dr Omar Bin Sulaiman, Chief Executive of Dubai Internet City, said: "The World Wide Web has revolutionised several important facets of our life. For many of us, it has become the primary source of information and the preferred medium of communication. It has also become an indispensable tool for conducting business.

"Dubai Internet City is keen to support events that help share and build our knowledge on effectively harnessing the benefits of the web. I am confident The 2nd Middle East Webmaster Forum will throw new insights into managing the resources that the web gives access to."
