15th Asian Games' Main Press Centre opened

Doha Asian Games Organising Committee (DAGOC) opened the doors of its Main Press Centre (MPC) to welcome over 2,200 accredited journalists and photographers to cover the 15th Asian Games.

Ahmed Al Khulaifi, Deputy Director General, Corporate Support, welcomed local media for a tour of DAGOC's state-of-the-art facility, following a ribbon cutting ceremony.

"The media is essential to a successful Asian Games and this magnificent facility has been designed to address all of their reporting needs," said Mr. Al Khulaifi. "Based on everything from news conference rooms to the calibre of service from dedicated staff, I am proud to welcome the international press to Doha".

The facility is part of the Main Media Centre, which is divided into two sections - the MPC and the International Broadcast Centre (IBC). The MPC is a temporary structure next to the existing Qatar International Exhibition Centre which houses the IBC. There will be an official Opening Ceremony for the IBC on 24 November.

• More than 1,300 journalists and 450 photographers are anticipated from all 45 participating countries and regions. The remainder of accreditations are for support, technical personnel, Electronic News Reporters (ENRs) and world news agencies.
• Largest media contingents arriving in Doha to cover the Games are China (360 staff), Japan (268); Korea (112), and India (67). Over 165 media have been accredited in Qatar to date.
• More than 1,500 square metres of private office space has been rented to more than 20 international media organisations.
• The main Work Room provides seating for 400 and is equipped with phone and internet access.
• The Photo Work Area has seating for 100 and on-site camera repair and technology support. Five hundred specially designed photo lockers are available.
• Forty dedicated INFO2006 terminals will provide competition results, quotes from competitors, news conference highlights, athlete biographies, and historical information on world record and Asian Games record performances.
• Two large video screens and 40 plasma TVs will provide coverage of the sports competitions.

FACT SHEET

Location:
Located in the diplomatic area of Doha at the northern end of the Corniche, the MPC is a short walk to Doha Bay and the largest retail shopping centre in Qatar. The MPC is within 10 kilometres of more than half of the 39 sports being contested.

All accredited media and broadcasters will enter the Main Media Centre at the main entrance located next to the Media Bus Plaza. This entrance leads into the MPC side of the Main Media Centre.

Hours of operation:
The MPC is open from 15 November and closes on 16 December.
From 15 to 23 November hours are 07:00 to 19:00 daily.
From 24 November to 16 December, the facility will be open 24 hours.

Media Conference Centre
The Media Conference Centre contains three media conference rooms that will host the daily Games-time news briefings and other DAGOC/OCA news conferences:

• The Oryx seats 500 and is the site of the daily Briefing. The Oryx Room has facilities for simultaneous interpretation between English and Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and Russian.
• The Falcon seats 100
• The Pearl seats 40

AGNS
The Asian Games News Service (AGNS) will be headquartered at the MPC and keep accredited media informed at the sports at venues across the Games. The AGNS will provide short, simple and objective news items, and useful facts and figures to assist the accredited media with their coverage of the 15th Asian Games. AGNS news will delivered online through the INFO2006 terminals at the MPC and individuals venues and through 'pigeon-hole' delivery.

The Main Lobby:
The Main Lobby is the centre for all of the MPC's retail and support services. At 90 metres in length, the design of the lobby captures the sporting excitement of the Games through the use of large decorative panels.

Three of DAGOC's Prestige Partners are providing services at the MPC:

• The Samsung Technology Lounge provides media members with a relaxing area for quiet phone calls.
• Qtel has provided an easy to use, centrally-located Internet Kiosk with free Internet access for on-site media.
• A full service branch of Qatar National Bank (QNB), including currency exchange, travellers' cheques, overseas wire transfers, and automatic teller machines.

Also on site are medical offices, a Prayer Room, beauty salon, post office, photo shop, general store, technology store, watch shop, travel agency, and tourism office.

TISSOT; the Official Timekeeper of the 15th Asian Games, has a retail kiosk to showcase their latest watch collection.

Catering
Arabic, Asian, continental and sub-continental cuisines are offered. The MPC also includes a coffee shop, an international lounge, and fast food outlets.

Environment Education Programme
The MPC also hosts a display highlighting DAGOC's environmental initiatives including the Bio-diesel project (the recycling of used cooking oil from the Games kitchens into Bio-diesel, a clean burning alternative fuel), a recycling programme which is new to Qatar and being implemented during Games time, and information on the Umm Tais National Park Project.
