UAE to host landmark Arab League Summit

Under the directives of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister, a landmark summit on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be held in Dubai on October 12, 2002, with government representatives from across the region attending.
Attended by ministers, high-level government officials and business leaders of the Arab World's Information and Communication Technology industry, the summit seeks to promote inter-governmental cooperation to boost ICT growth in the Arab world.
"We greatly look forward to organising the Arab ICT Summit, and hope that participants will take this chance to generate fresh ideas that will consolidate Arab efforts towards upgrading and developing the ICT sectors in the region," said Dr. Omar Bin Sulaiman, CEO of Dubai Internet City (DIC).
Speakers at the summit, who include His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed and Mr. Amr Moussa, Secretary-General of the Arab League, will explore the problems facing the region's ICT industry and present their suggestions and proposals for solving them through a unified regional approach.
"The government of the UAE is known for its initiatives in the region, so we are happy and honoured to host the ICT Summit", said His Excellency Ahmed Ali Al Blouchi, General Manager of Emirates Media Inc. "The summit will address a wide range of issues that have a direct impact on the development of information and communication technology in the region," he added.
Issues to be discussed at the summit include state policies that enhance the ICT revolution, the development of infrastructure, the development of human capital, E-government initiatives and the development of an Arab presence on the Internet.
Mr. Ahmad BinByat, Director General, Dubai Technology, Electronic Commerce and Media Free Zone Authority (TECOM) added, "The discussions at the summit will contribute to shaping a clear vision and roadmap for regional ICT development. We are hopeful that the ideas and insights brought up by the Summit will assume concrete shape in the form of a future joint Arab project."
