Mercedes-Benz GL-Class voted 'SUV of the year 2007'

  • PRESS RELEASE

The seven-seater Mercedes-Benz GL 450 has beaten off 22 competitors to win the best SUV of the year 2007 awarded by Motor Trend, the leading U.S. motoring magazine with an average of over 7 million readers a month.

The Motor Trend editorial team had to judge their largest SUV field to date. In addition to extensive on-road testing on the public highway, test sites and off road, the test criteria also included an assessment of functionality, build quality, spaciousness as well as equipment and appointments.

Technical innovations were also evaluated, looking at areas such as powertrain, active and passive safety, and design. Another important test criterion was value for money, particularly important among U.S. consumers.

"The premium off-roader offers excellent handling both on and off-road and pampers occupants with its extremely spacious accommodation and the comfort of a luxury saloon," said Johannes Fritz, Director, Sales and Marketing, Mercedes Car Group, Middle East. "With the optionally available PRE-SAFEŽ preventive occupant protection system, a world first in this market segment, Mercedes-Benz has also raised safety to an even higher level."

By scooping the "SUV of the year 2007" the GL notched up its second major award in the U.S. market. Earlier this year 'Car & Driver' magazine voted the GL the winner in an extensive SUV comparative test.
