The agreement was signed at the Microsoft booth during GITEX 2006, which was held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC) from 18 -22 November 2006.

The MOU aims at enhancing future cooperation in information exchange policies and strategies, as well as technical cooperation, skills development programs and security infrastructure. In addition, it provides for Microsoft consulting services to cover licensing, primary application solutions and first level support services.

The MOU was signed by HE Darwish Ahmad Al Zaraouni, Director General, EIDA and Mr. Charbel Fakhoury, General Manager, Microsoft Gulf.

"Signing the MOU with Microsoft is part of EIDA's strategy to strengthen cooperation with leading IT companies on a worldwide basis. We anticipate that this will enhance our performance and perpetuate IT knowledge among our staff. This cannot but help us in the professional and skillful implementation of the Population Register and national ID card program,"

H.E. Darwish Ahmad Al Zaraouni, Director General of EIDA said.

"The agreement covers a number of areas for further cooperation. First among them is the development of some of the electronic applications which are important in the accurate indentification of individuals on the internet. We will also cooperate with Microsoft on the enhancement of other electronic applications such as documents management, automation of office transactions, maintaining individual privacy, and e-services, to name but a few," he added.

Mr. Charbel Fakhoury, General Manager, Microsoft Gulf said that the MOU reflects the commitment of Microsoft to cooperate with government offices and departments. He said there is potential to capitalize on the capabilities and experiences of each partner in a way that enhances cooperation between Microsoft and EIDA. This will result in enhanced productivity and performance, he noted.

"The Population Register and national ID card program is a groundbreaking project in the UAE and the region. It utilizes technology to improve services delivered by government and enhance the quality of life enjoyed by all residents of the UAE," Mr. Fakhoury added.

EIDA has been given responsibility for the introduction of a modern Population Register and ID Card system. This initiative is expected to further the country's efforts towards the provision of a secure environment for both citizens and expatriates who live in the UAE. It is designed to keep personal identities secure from fraudulent or unauthorized use, support government planning services, enhance economic growth and place the UAE in the front ranks of nations entering the age of information technology.
