Match schedule announced for Dubai's biggest football tournament

The match schedule for Dubai's major new football tournament - the Dubai Football Challenge 2007 - and the fourth team participating in the Challenge, VfB Stuttgart, were announced today by the tournament organisers at Soccerex.

The Tournament is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, and is being organised by the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), Dubai Sports City and IEP Sports and Leisure (IEP).

Football fans in the UAE and beyond can expect to be entertained by two days of thrilling live football played at the highest professional levels when the Dubai Football Challenge kicks off on January 8 at Al Nasr Club. The opening day will see German greats Hamburg SV playing against the Iranian national team at 5pm followed by the UAE national team against Stuttgart at 7.30pm.

The culmination of the Tournament on January 10 will feature Iran playing Stuttgart (5pm) and the UAE taking on Hamburg (7.30pm).

Speaking at the Press conference, Hamad bin Mejren, DTCM Manager Missions, said: "The match schedule we have announced offers football fans great excitement on both days. We look forward to seeing some fantastic football played by some of the best players in the world."

Stuart Webb, Chairman of IEP Sports and Leisure, said: "We are delighted that German super-club, VfB Stuttgart, have accepted our invitation to participate in January's inaugural Dubai Football Challenge. Stuttgart's inclusion completes a team line-up of outstanding quality and the intriguing mix between International teams and leading club sides guarantees to provide a thrilling spectacle for football fans across the region as all four teams compete head-to-head for the magnificent trophy."

U Balasubramaniam, CEO of Dubai Sports City, agreed:

"The inaugural Dubai Football Challenge features four great teams and Dubai Sports City, together with our partners IEP Sports and Leisure and DTCM are very proud to be creating this tournament which will become a regular fixture in Dubai's sporting calendar."


Essa Saleh, Managing Director of the UAE FA, said: "The Dubai Football Challenge will serve to provide our UAE National team players with the right competitive frame of mind as they prepare to defend our home turf in the upcoming Gulf Cup and it's no secret that our UAE National team players will want to win the tournament and put on a good performance against both German Clubs Stuttgart and Hamburg who are made up of World Class players. Furthermore, participating in an international Challenge of this magnitude will be the perfect opportunity for us to garner Expat support ahead of our Gulf Cup run. We look forward to welcoming the Dubai Cup Challenge annually and we wish all the participating teams a wonderful stay in the UAE."

Thomas Doll, Club Manager of Hamburg SV, commented:" We are very happy to take part in this great tournament. All the teams are first class and I am sure we will experience some amazing matches. For us this tournament is a great platform to prepare for the second part of the season. The whole team is looking forward to playing some great football as well as taking advantage of Dubai's legendary hospitality."
Dariush Mostafavi, General Secretary of the Iran Football Federation, added his support: "We are delighted to have been invited to participate in the Dubai Football Challenge as we are keen to support any activities that promote the development of football in the Middle East region. We hope to please our many fans in Dubai with some outstanding football."

Jochen Schneider, Manager Sport Administrator, VfB Stuttgart, said: "We are very excited about participating in this prestigious tournament. We had already planned some winter training in Dubai around this time, so being able to play against top teams in a competitive environment is an added bonus."
