The clean-up will be held tomorrow (Tuesday, December 12,2006).
Volunteers from the U.K Embassy, Environment Friends Society, Tabreed, ADNOC's Technical Institute and Petroleum Institute, Zayed University, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Emirates Bank, Higher Colleges of Technology (Abu Dhabi Women's College) and Veeco Engineering will clear away debris from the Ras Al Akhdar Beach and the Mina Port.
The volunteers will be brought together in a meaningful activity that will help change their environment for the better. The volunteers will be mobilized around a powerful idea - that a careless moment by us can impact our marine life through our lifetime, our children's lifetime and future generations. EAD will provide the volunteers with all the tools necessary to ensure an effective clean-up such as gloves, trash bags, protective caps from the sun and plenty of bottled water to drink. The quantities and types of garbage will be collected and where possible, the collected garbage will be recycled.
'In this day and age, we need to remember that preserving our marine environment goes hand in hand with preserving our culture and heritage. This clean-up is an excellent opportunity for Government agencies and Non-Government organizations to work together to look after our shared environment,' said H.E Majid Al Mansouri, Secretary General of EAD.
Clean Up the UAE campaign was launched in 2002. Last year, 15,675 volunteers took part in 18 sites around the country. This year, more volunteers are participating and more sites in the country are being targeted.
