Qatar Petrochemical Co. (QAPCO) is one of founders of GPCA. On 1st March, 2006, a memorandum was signed by eight Gulf petrochemical and chemical companies for establishing Gulf Petrochemical & Chemical Association (GPCA).

Eng. Al-Mohanadi, said that about 400 participants are expected to take part in the forum, in addition to other sponsoring companies. "This Petrochemical forum is one of the most important world events. A number of famous and renowned spokesmen, who are concerned with petrochemical industry, are going to deliver their speeches. Vital topics relating to petrochemicals in the Gulf will be discussed on the agenda."

He went on to say that GPCA, a non-profit association, is considered as the first of its kind in the Middle East. Its role is to handle all petrochemical issues, which have to do with the logistics and environment, in addition to conducting studies and researches in this sector. GPCA will cooperate with similar Petrochemical companies and Associations outside the Gulf in Europe, Asia and America.

He said that Dubai was chosen for GPCA's office premises, for its business, economic and strategic importance. GPCA aims to provide different opportunities to its members to exchange knowledge, viewpoints, expertise, encourage trade and free competition, develop Petrochemical and Chemical sector and all business-related works in the Gulf area.

Eng. Al-Mohanadi called for activating coordination and cooperation among companies and research centers concerned with industrial safety and clean environment, as well as coordinating with different dignitaries and committees assigned to follow up standards and specifications in Qatar and GCC countries.
Eng. Al-Mohanadi, explained that the idea of founding GPCA has been emerged due to various considerations; Gulf is one of the most important areas for producing petrochemicals and chemicals in the world and vital petrochemical projects are being executed in Qatar and GCC countries. So presently there is a vital need for cooperation and communication among leading petrochemical producers. Most importantly is that this sector enjoys huge reserves of gas which lead to prosperity of Hydrocarbon industry in Qatar, and in the Gulf, in general.

GPCA's job is also to encourage petrochemical researches and offer solutions to relevant scientific and technical issues as well as encourage and develop the human resources of petrochemical sector and organize meetings, conferences, forums and exhibitions.

Eng. Al-Mohanadi finally expressed his hope that the GPCA Forum would provide promising opportunities in Qatar, due to the accelerating growth in the field of petrochemicals. This requires establishing service, logistics and operational companies to cope with the progress of this sector. He called upon all petrochemical companies in the Middle East to effectively participate in the GPCA First Forum to make it a success.

QAPCO plant is situated on the seacoast with jetty facilities and exports its entire range of products worldwide. QAPCO commenced commercial production in 1981 and within a short time, was well-established in the global market due to its quality and reliability. To pursue leadership, continuous improvement, process and system orientation, involvement of the people and measurement of performance in support of our journey to achieve excellence of performance, we have re-designed our Quality Management System to comply with the requirements of ISO 9001:2000 standard, implemented it in our practice and achieved the official certification to its requirements by beginning of the year 2002.

The main products of the company are Ethylene and LDPE. Solid sulphur is generated as a by-product in the process. The required feedstock, Ethane gas, is supplied by the state-owned Qatar Petroleum (QP) for the production of Ethylene, a significant part of which is then used in the production of various grades of LDPE, marketed under the 'LOTRENE' brand name.

QAPCO built its vision on a solid foundation of state-of-the-art technology, which will make possible a succession of new generation products. Our manufacturing facilities consist of an Ethylene plant with a designed annual capacity of 525,000 MT, two LDPE plants with a total annual capacity of 360,000 MT and a Sulphur plant with an annual rated capacity of 70,000 MT besides the self-sufficient utilities, plants and other offsite and auxiliary facilities. The capacity of both Ethylene and LDPE plants increased to these levels effective from mid-1996 as a result of an expansion project undertaken by the Company during 1993-'95.
