London Business School hosts Worldclass in Dubai

Some forty leading CEOs and Ministers from the GCC states will gather in Dubai from 7-9 October for an programme dubbed as a second mini-Davos style event organised by London Business School as part of the School's series of Executive Education Worldclasses, which bring world renowned faculty to key regions of the world.

The event is much sought after and strictly by invitation only, and has the strong endorsement and support of the School's Middle East Regional Advisory Board.

Opening the programme will be Professor Laura D'Andrea Tyson, Dean of London Business School, and formerly the President's National Economic Advisor in the Clinton Administration. As Dubai and the region continues their growth and development the Worldclass will take the timely theme of 'Competing to Win: Leadership, Innovation and Corporate Governance for the 21st Century'. Joining Professor Tyson will be the Middle East Regional Advisory Board's Chairman Saeb Eigner and four of the School's best known faculty: Richard Brealey, Gary Hamel (via video-link), Costas Markides, and Jeffrey Sampler. These leading experts will focus on the challenges for businesses and the region's economies from an increasingly competitive world, and will analyse how organisations can leverage effective leadership, innovation and corporate governance to commercial and strategic advantage, as well as looking at issues facing the creation and sustenance of an entrepreneurial society.

• Laura D'Andrea Tyson, Dean of London Business School will present on 'Globalisation and the Global Economic Outlook'. Professor Tyson is an expert on economic development, international trade and macroeconomics.

• The first day, led by Jeff Sampler, will look at the flexibility required by firms to flourish in today's rapidly changing environment. Professor Sampler specialises in the use of technology and information as a strategic resource.

• The second day, led by Costas Markides, who has recently won London Business School's teaching award, will explore how established competitors can strategically innovate their businesses if they are successful in discovering a new strategic position. Gary Hamel, considered by many to be the world's reigning strategy guru will argue the critical case for innovation at a time when retrenchment is being touted by many.

• On the third day, Richard Brealey whose book 'Principles of Corporate Finance' is the most widely used finance textbook will examine the challenges of control, governance and financial architecture for the Region.

• On the final day, Saeb Eigner, will look at the issues facing the creation of an entrepreneurial society.

The programme supported by Emirates Airways & the Emirates Towers Hotel will take place in Dubai at the Emirates Towers Hotel. Faculty:

Richard Brealey is Emeritus Professor of Finance at London Business School, and was a full-time faculty member of the School from 1968 to 1998. During this time he held the positions of Director of the Institute of Finance and Accounting from 1974-1985, and Deputy Principal and Governor of the School from 1984-1988. He has also worked as Special Advisor to the Governor of the Bank of England. He is a former President of the European Finance Association and a former director of the American Finance Association.

Costas Markides is the Robert P Bauman Professor of Strategic Leadership at London Business School. A fellow of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he also teaches on customised programmes for Nortel, LVMH, Standard Chartered Bank and Roche, and the School's flagship Senior Executive Programme. He has worked as an Associate with the Cyprus Development Bank and as a Research Associate at Harvard Business School. He is on the Academic Board of the Cyprus Institute of Management and is also a non-executive Director of Amathus (UK) Ltd, a tour operating company. His current research interests include the management of diversified firms and the use of innovation and creativity to achieve strategic breakthroughs.

Jeffrey Sampler is Associate Professor of Information Management and Strategy at London Business School. His research is particularly in the areas of Business Strategy, Digital Business, Information Businesses, Information as a Strategic Resource and Information Technology Enabled Alternative Organisational Arrangement. His articles have appeared in such journals as the Journal of Management Information Systems, MIS Quarterly, Strategic Management Journal and Sloan Management Review. Jeff's teaching has covered a range of industries including HSBC, PWC, LVMH and the School's e-business programmes.

Laura D'Andrea Tyson is Dean of London Business School having joined in January 2002 from the Haas School of Business at the University of California where she was also Dean. Laura served in the Clinton Administration from January 1993 through December 1996. Between February 1995 and December 1996 she served as the President's National Economic Adviser and was the highest ranking woman in the Clinton White House. Laura also served as a member of the President's National Security Council and Domestic Policy Council. Laura is a member of several Boards of Directors, including Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Eastman Kodak Company, and Human Genome Sciences. She serves on the Board of Trustees of The Asia Foundation; the Advisory Board of the G7 Group, Inc. and The Journal of Economic Perspectives; and the Boards of Editors of California Management Review. She writes regularly about economic policy matters in Business Week, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and other internationally syndicated newspapers and magazines.

Gary Hamel has been described as "the world's reigning strategy guru" by The Economist, and Professor Peter Senge of MIT describes him as "the most influential thinker on strategy in the Western world." As the author of concepts such as "core competence," "strategic intent," "industry foresight," and "industry revolution," Professor Hamel has changed the focus and language of strategy in many of the world's most successful companies. In his work with world leading companies such as Shell, Nokia, CGU, Ford and others, professor Hamel and his colleagues at Strategos have helped management teams create rule-breaking strategies that have generated billions of dollars in new wealth. Professor Hamel is the world's most sought after speaker on strategy and innovation. He is a frequent speaker at the World Economic Forum, at the Fortune 500 CEO Roundtable and Bill Gates' CEO Summit. He has also spoken to hundreds of boards and senior management groups, and is a fellow of the World Economic Forum.

Guest Presentation:

Saeb Eigner is an Austrian national and was brought up in England (went to Milfield School in Somerset). He is a director of Lonworld S.A. and Chief Executive Officer of its principal operating company in the UK. Lonworld is a financial services group covering Private Banking, Investment Banking, Corporate Finance and Offshore Trust businesses; Lonworld's business is largely in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. Saeb is also on the Board of other financial and investment institutions. Formerly he was a Senior Manager at ANZ Grindlays Bank plc in London, heading the Middle East and Indian Sub-Continent division of the private bank. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and holds an MBA from London and Masters Degree in Management from the London Business School, where he completed the International Executive Masters Programme. Saeb is Deputy Chairman of the London Business School Alumni Board and Chairman of the Middle East Regional Advisory Board.

Middle East Regional Advisory Board
