Tawam Hospital announces four new appointments bringing international healthcare expertise to the UAE

Tawam Hospital, the UAE and Gulf region's premier healthcare provider with affiliation to Johns Hopkins Medicine, has announced new appointments as part of its ongoing measures to strengthen services at the 469-bed, Al Ain-based medical facility and build it into a world-class centre offering the best in specialist treatments in oncology, medicine, gynaecology, dentistry and intensive care.

While Dr Jack Borders assumes charge as Medical Affairs Manager, Mr. Steve Matarelli takes over as Chief Officer of Clinical Services and Nursing. At the same time, Mr. Rusty Schlessman has been appointed as the new Operation Chief Officer, and Mr. Alec Napier has took up the post of management of Tawam Patient Affairs and Public Relations Department.

Dr Jack Borders takes over as Medical Affairs Manager at Tawam. After completing his training in Otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr Borders trained with one of the world's foremost paediatric airway experts, Dr Bruce Benjamin in Australia and established a referral centre for airway problems in Georgia, US. Over the past several years, Dr Borders has been involved extensively in international medical work, both in terms of direct medical and surgical intervention in medically underserved areas of the world and with respect to technology transfer.

Mr. Steven Matarelli has more than 20 years experience in health service delivery management and human resource development a multi levelled health care facilities. He is a professional nurse with dual Master degree in Medical Surgical Nursing and Nursing Administration. In 1998, he earned his PhD in Health Administration from Kennedy-Western University. His previous assignments saw him holding various key positions with HCA- Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, CA, Flower Health Care Affiliates, Inc., Atlanta, Doctors Hospital of Hyde Park and Vencor Hospital.

Mr Schlessman joins Tawam from his previous job as Project Administrator at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Prior to this, he served as Administrative Resident at Johns Hopkins Health System, Baltimore, Maryland; as Intern to the chief operating officer at Kansas University Physicians Inc; and as Research Assistant in the Department of Health Policy and Management at University of Kansas, gaining considerable experience in surgical instrumentation and hospital management systems.

Mr Schlessman has also worked with XIOtech Corporation and Waddell & Reed in the United States. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in Public Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Baltimore, Maryland and has a masters' degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Mr Napier took up the post of Tawam's Patient Affairs and Public Relations Department manager. Mr Napier has wide experience in customer service, having held various customer service positions in multinational companies including the East Asiatic Company and Sony Corporation.

Mr Napier also worked in business development for a major Thai hospital chain before moving to Tawam Hospital. He has a Masters degree in Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management's joint programme with Sasin GSB and has attended the Harvard School of Public Health's post graduate programme.
