The X-Ray experience links academic learning with experiential learning by supporting and reinforcing both learning environments.

The content of this new dynamic and innovative tool is accessed through WebCT Vista and is available to all Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) campuses. The project provides a structure and shell/template for future add-on modules such as Limb X-ray and Head X-ray techniques.

The team members behind the creation of this tool felt encouraged by H. H. Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and ruler of Dubai, who is keen to see the medical profession develop and sustain high standards in the UAE. "The 'experience' showcases best practice which then sets a minimum standard of practice that the students can strive for in the clinical environment. We hope this will help satisfy the quality needs of industry as well as the quality of DWC academic achievements," said Diane Pyper, DWC Health Sciences faculty and one of the project's managers.

UAE medical imaging students are provided for the first time with this e-learning tool. Bringing together clinical practice with in-class education, the tool "is the first of its kind in the Gulf Corporate Council area. It has great potential for growth since it is a template that can be built upon," noted Mark Karstad, DWC e-learning coordinator and project manager of the new tool.

The launch was attended by D. Salish, Medical Director NMC Speciality Hospital, S. Gopinath, Manager Corporate Relations NMC Speciality Hospital, Al Qusais, Dr. Howard Reed, HCT Senior Director and DWC Director, DWC senior management and staff members, and DWC radiography students. During the press event, attendees were provided with a live demonstration of the program and were able to observe a group of radiography students working on the materials. Filming of the X-Ray Experience took place at NMC Speciality Hospital in Al-Qusais.

Blended learning is a feature of DWC teaching and this e-learning tool is an example of a student-centered learning medium. Students can access the 'experience' 24/7 - on and off campus. At the same time, teachers can support, promote and utilize it at all stages of student development including preparing students prior, during and after clinical practice.
