Dubai Municipality and IBM Corporation discussed cooperation in various fields as the global computer giant plans to set up a training centre in Dubai to train professionals and students in software development.

This came in a meeting between Hussain Nasser Lootah, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, and Steve Mills, IBM's Senior Vice President and Group Executive, Software Group, at the municipality today.

Praising the existing cooperation between the Municipality and IBM, Lootah said the municipality is looking forward to benefit from the latest advanced technologies introduced by IBM in various fields.

Mr. Mills also reviewed the progress of Dubai Municipality's latest e-government projects, including the 90 per cent e-Government transition rate accomplished by the civic body.

"This is a great accomplishment by the yardsticks we use to measure e-performance of government departments world-wide," he said.

Mr. Mills expressed IBM's interest to setup a joint (Service Oriented Architecture) SOA Leadership Centre (SLC) in Dubai. The centre would provide enablement opportunities and education on the use of service orientation to transform companies' software applications into reusable services that improve business operations. It will also offer the ability to demonstrate and to work hands on with a solution in the perfect environment supported by experts who would be available for briefings and design sessions.

Students from different universities in the Emirates will be able to have access to the centre's skilled resources, offering a further boost to efforts to encourage software development, innovation and research and development capabilities in the UAE's educational sector. The centre will host university students and faculty members for open lab days among different learning events to enhance technical education.

Also present in the meeting were Jason Weisser, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, SOA advance technology, Takreem El Tohamy, General Manager, IBM Middle East, Egypt and Pakistan as well as Mohammed AbdulKarim Julfar, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality for Financial and Properties Affairs, and AbdulHakim Malek, Director of IT Department.
