Delivering the keynote address to the gathering of some 250 CEOs and high-level management executives representing Dubai World's business units from around the world, he cited Dubai's determined pursuit of its developmental goals despite widespread scepticism.

Mr Bin Sulayem said: "We've faced many challenges and hurdles in the past but always managed to overcome them through sheer grit and determination. Dubai's momentous growth is a testament to our commitment to make a stronghold in the region. In Dubai we lead by example and when we believe in an idea, we go ahead and implement it. We're where we are today because we believed in an idea and gave shape to it.

"China and India are the world's most promising emerging markets today and are expected to play leading roles in the coming decades. In today's global economic climate businesses cannot expand without entering these markets."

Held at the Bab Al Shams Resort, the Global Management Forum is designed to facilitate greater interaction between the various business units comprising Dubai World.

Also addressing the opening session were Klaus Herms, CEO of Kuehne Nagel, Dr Martin Stopford, Director of Research, Clarksons, and Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Group CEO, Dubai World.

In his speech, Mr Bin Thaniah said: "The connection between Dubai World and its business units is founded on absolute strength as we pursue global expansion. We leverage the relationship between group companies to open doors to new markets and new opportunities in a way that nothing else can match."

Dr Stopford, a renowned economist, said in his speech: "The year 2007 holds strong promises for global business. We can foresee growth potential in a wide range of economic activities, especially in international shipping. In order to be truly successful, globalization should reach to countries beyond China and India."

The two-day event has brought together the top management brains of the Dubai World holding company under one roof for the first time, providing them an opportunity to network with colleagues from around the world and swap best practice ideas.

Day 2 of the Global Management Forum will see a leadership development and networking programme, including inter-active exercises on such related topics as business best practices, cross-cultural models, team dynamics and group synergy.
