- United Arab Emirates: Saturday, January 20 - 2007 at 12:11
- PRESS RELEASE
The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT) in the United Arab Emirates have signed an agreement with Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT), a leading Irish third level institution, that will bring many benefits to key sectors in both countries.
The agreement will see the parties cooperating to meet the needs "For more specialists with international exposure and experience". Particular emphasis will be placed on the disciplines of business, engineering, health sciences and information technology. It will involve the exchange of academic staff between the UAE and Ireland, student placement and study programmes and cooperation on research and curriculum development initiatives.
The MoU was signed by Dr Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology; Dr Bob Richards, Chief Executive Officer, CERT; and Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, President of Athlone Institute of Technology. It was witnessed by the Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Mr Ahern, and by the Irish Minister for Education, Ms Mary Hanafin.
It is envisaged that ten students from the UAE will progress from diploma programmes at the Higher Colleges of Technology to bachelor degree programmes in science, engineering and business at Athlone Institute of Technology each academic year. The first students will enrol in Ireland in September 2007. When they complete their undergraduate programme, they will have the opportunity of postgraduate study at AIT. The partners, AIT and HCT/CERT, have strong links to industry and business, and it is believed that this will result in the successful placement of graduates.
"AIT has partnered very successfully with colleges around the world and we are delighted to build new relationships in the United Arab Emirates," said Professor Ó Catháin. "This is the first time we have signed an agreement in the Middle East. There are tremendous opportunities to be explored through our MoU with the Higher Colleges of Technology and CERT and we look forward to seeing this partnership grow and develop. The Irish economy is one of the most successful in the world, and I am sure that students from the UAE who participate in this initiative will benefit greatly from their time at AIT," he said.
