Cleveland Clinic to demonstrate 'Virtual Visit' at Arab Health 2007

  • United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, January 30 - 2007 at 08:51
  • PRESS RELEASE

Cleveland Clinic, one of the world's leading not-for-profit, multispecialty academic medical centers, will demonstrate its new Virtual Visit teleconsultation service for the first time at Arab Health 2007, which takes place in Dubai's World Trade Center from January 29 to February 1, 2007.

Cleveland Clinic, currently ranked as one of the best three hospitals in the United States, already has a successful Internet-based second opinion service called eCleveland Clinic MyConsult, which is made available to patients worldwide. This new teleconsultation service will allow real-time patient examinations using interactive live video technology, supported by its existing eCleveland Clinic services.

"Many patients want to seek expert medical advice from Cleveland Clinic, particularly when it comes to life-threatening and life-altering conditions, however the distance and physical travel involved is often a significant obstacle to them,"

said C. Martin Harris, M.D., Chief Information Officer, Cleveland Clinic.

Virtual Visit makes it easier for patients to see and talk to a Cleveland Clinic physician, receiving personalized, one-on-one care, even though the doctor and patient maybe far apart.

"Our interactive teleconsultation service allows patients and doctors to communicate anytime, anywhere," said Harris.

Cleveland Clinic's Virtual Visit service will allow patients worldwide to receive personalized examinations and diagnosis from the nearest Cleveland Clinic Virtual Visit services center. The doctor at Cleveland Clinic sits behind a number of screens that display all of the patients' medical information, including their x-rays, CT scans, and other necessary medical images and records. Meanwhile, the patient that requires an examination sits in a medical office equipped with teleconsultation capabilities.

Using the Virtual Visit, doctor and patient are connected with the latest secure communications technology, using live video that allows the doctor and patient to interact in real time. Not only is the doctor able to discuss the patient's history and symptoms face-to-face with the patient, but the doctor has total control of camera views and angles via a remote control. In addition, a qualified technician is on hand to help the patient and support the doctor, facilitating the doctor's requests to complete a full medical examination, right down to looking in the patient's ears, nose and throat.

Cleveland Clinic will be holding three live Virtual Visit demonstrations at its booth during Arab Health 2007, daily from Monday, January 29 through Wednesday, January 31. The three daily sessions are by registration only and will take place at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day. To attend, visitors are required to register at Cleveland Clinic's booth, number 3A10, between exhibition halls two and three.
