Dubai World, one of the world's largest holding companies, is actively planning to expand further in the increasingly lucrative Chinese market, it was announced at the on-going Financial Times China-Middle East Summit at the Dubai International Finance Centre on Tuesday.

Explaining the group's expansion plans to identify emerging investment opportunities in China, David Jackson, CEO, Istithmar, said:

"There are several sectors where investments can be improved upon between China and Dubai. Tourism, for instance, holds great opportunities, with Nakheel already having a vital presence in the market. Another potential site of cooperation is education, especially universities, which may materialise sometime in the near future. Financial services, including the mortgage markets, could also be tapped into."

Speaking at a panel discussion on investment growth opportunities presented by both the Middle East and China, Mr. Jackson commented that certain industries in China can benefit greatly through Dubai's experience:

"I see the logistics side of things, namely distribution and transportation, posing a challenge for China's rapidly expanding economy. These challenges can be overcome through a synergetic partnership between Dubai and China."

Dismissing the view that Arabs always sought fast growth returns, Mr Jackson cited the example of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, saying:

"I don't necessarily buy the premise that Arabs in general look for high returns when investing in business. Sheikh Mohammed is a great example of a leader whose vision stretches not only for the next 10 years but for the next 50 years. The expansion of the airport infrastructure with the new Jebel Ali International Airport, and the various sea ports is an indication of the long-term policies that are being implemented with the future generations in mind."
