Etisalat University College, the engineering education arm of national telecommunications provider etisalat, has teamed up with mobile technology giant Nokia to launch the second Mobile Phone Application Contest (NMAC 2007) on May 15, 2007.

The contest, created to encourage UAE youth to research and use new technologies to develop real world solutions, is open to all colleges and universities in the UAE.

To help students plan their entries, Nokia will provide free two-day training workshops on mobile application development through Java 2 Micro Edition and other platforms. The workshops are scheduled for February 24 and 25.

"The purpose behind contests like this one is to create a community that can develop unique mobile applications that enrich Nokia platforms with content relevant to the regional and local culture," said Mohammed Essawi, Head of Technology Marketing and Business Development, Nokia Middle East and Africa. "In addition to the hands-on training sessions for all contestants, the top three teams will receive awards for their efforts."

Dr. Arif Al-Hammadi, Manager of Etisalat University College, said: "The contest offers an excellent opportunity for students to demonstrate and sharpen their computing and mobile programming skills and for academics to consider the local and regional market needs in this field. This contest may actually bring to the market compelling mobile phone applications to meet the demands of today's mobile customers".

Applications have already been circulated to all UAE educational institutions by the Contest Steering Committee. Contestants can register on website, www.euc.ac.ae/nmac2007 until February 18. Applicants will need to submit their projects to the steering committee before May 5th.

"Students will have three months to develop a qualified, culturally-focused mobile phone application," said Dr. Hassan Barada, Head of the Computer Engineering Department at Etisalat University College.

A steering committee made up of university professors and representatives of Nokia and etisalat will judge the applications according to their quality, applicability to the UAE, Islamic and Arabic culture, usability, and support for multiple devices.
