The inaugural seminar on international air law and regulation was the first in a series of short courses being offered by DAUniversity, the education and training arm of Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, as it builds on its world-class aviation education programme.

The seminar was conducted by Dr George Williams, a senior lecturer in air transport from the UK's Cranfield University, and Carole Blackshaw, a solicitor specialising in aviation with the London law firm Denton Wilde Sapte and visiting lecturer at Cranfield since 1987.

The four-day course provided an insight into the international civil air transport regulatory arena, with a focus on the likely impact of de-regulation and liberalisation on the industry.

The seminar at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Dubai, was attended by a range of aviation and aerospace professionals, including Jack Romero, CEO of RAK Airways, who said afterwards: "It is great for the UAE to be at the forefront of developments in the world and education plays a major role for the future generation of leaders.

'RAK Airways is proud to be part of this development process and for us, the national airline of Ras Al Khaimah, education in the transportation industry is key to securing the aviation managers of tomorrow. Thanks to Dubai Aerospace University and Cranfield University's partnership this process will go from strength to strength."

Dr George Ebbs, President of DAUniversity, said: "We are delighted that lecturers of the calibre and standing of Dr Williams and Carole Blackshaw, both respected authors as well as lecturers in their field, have been available to our students.

"Our mission is to offer world-class educational programmes for the aerospace industry and in offering these short courses, we are able to do so in a flexible format that meets the needs of professionals seeking to expand their knowledge and develop their careers."

Other short course subjects being offered by DAUniversity include airline and airport marketing; airline fleet planning; airline revenue management, pricing and distribution; air transport management seminar; flight data monitoring and flight operational quality assurance in commercial aviation; aircraft conceptual design; aircraft structural design; aircraft fatigue and damage tolerance; composite material structures; airframe systems; flight simulation; cabin interiors and evacuation.

The next course will be Aircraft Conceptual Design and will take from March 5-8, at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers. The course will again be lead by two Cranfield experts, Dr Howard Smith and Professor John Fielding.

Dr Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Aircraft Design at Cranfield University. He is head of the Aircraft Design Centre and has led a number of Aircraft Conceptual Design research projects around the world.

Professor Fielding is Head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Cranfield University and has worked in industry for 12 years. He is the author of many publications including a book on Aircraft Design.

In addition to the short courses, DAUniversity, which opened its doors last October, is the first of its kind in the Middle East region to offer Masters and Doctoral programmes in aerospace-focused business and engineering, through its partnership agreement with the UK's world-renowned Cranfield University.

The aerospace sector is one of the most dynamic industries in the world today. The skills gained at DAUniversity will empower students, enabling them to further their careers at aerospace companies across the globe.
