Satellite navigation systems at the forefront of Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST) workshop

Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST) collaborated with the Galileo Supervisory Authority, the Space Industry represented by UK-based Spirent Communications and national UAE authorities to organise today a workshop on the satellite navigation systems.

This one-day event has aimed at addressing the technologies and applications involved in the Glonass, GPS, and Galileo systems, the space based augmentation systems such as EGNOS, WAAS, and MSAS, as well as other applications.

Ahmed Obaid Al Mansoori the Director General of EIAST opened the workshop by saying: "Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST) aims at inspiring scientific innovation and fostering technological advancement within UAE and the region.

"We have been at the heart of an initiative to set up an advanced space programme that will contribute to scientific and technological developments to enhance the fast economical and industrial growth in Dubai and UAE. This programme will use highly sophisticated technologies and accurate spatial information for a variety of applications that support UAE's drive to develop this sector to new and advanced levels."

EIAST has partnered with several international space agencies from the EU, South Korea, USA, Russia and others to create a continual access to spatial information on the cutting edge developments in this sector.

The Dean of Scientific and Technological Affairs at EIAST, Professor Dr. Anwar Dawood said: "this workshop is set to provide the participants with an update on the latest technologies in satellite navigation systems as well as the related air, sea and land applications. It is one of a series of informative events that EIAST is planning to organise in UAE to promote and grow the deployment of these highly developed technologies in the country."

Andy Proctor from Spirent Communications and Angeline Billot from the Gallileo Supervisory Authority presented as well to over 30 specialised engineers and technicians from the various related government sectors participated in the first of its kind workshop held in Dubai today.
