Open to early-to-mid-career journalists covering science or medical issues, the programme invites resumes in English with a cover letter detailing how the fellowship would benefit the applicant, in addition to two recently published articles in English or Arabic. The deadline for submission is 1 March, 2007. Three successful fellowship candidates will be notified by 19 March, 2007.
Noora Al Abbar, Tatweer's Marketing and Communications Manager, said: 'Selected journalists will actively participate in a vigorous five-day programme at Harvard Medical School, acquiring skills on accurate, professional and reliable methods of reporting science and health issues.
'Bilingual aspirants will be given preference in order to increase readership in health and science across the region, while complementing Dubai's vision of creating a hub for world-class healthcare.'
Successful journalists will be invited to Boston, USA by Harvard Medical School's (HMS) Office of Public Affairs. During the five day programme, under the direction of the Office of Public Affairs, the Science Writer Fellows will interact with their Boston-based counterparts, and gain interview opportunities with leading Harvard Medical School administrators and HMS faculty researchers and physicians. Visits to hospitals and research facilities connected with Harvard Medical School will also be included in the agenda.
Tatweer, a subsidiary of Dubai Holding, initiated the programme with the aim of raising standards of health and science journalism in the region.
Details of the Science Writer Fellowship Programme were announced on 15 November, 2006 at the Dubai Press Club by senior officials of the Dubai Healthcare City and Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research.
