Pioneering international climate change exhibition to embark on national tour of the UAE

  • United Arab Emirates: Sunday, February 25 - 2007 at 15:43
  • PRESS RELEASE

The unique touring photographic exhibition entitled 'NorthSouthEastWest' will open at Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation on February 28, 2007 and will run until March 8, 2007, when it will move to Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, and Dubai as part of its tour of the UAE.

NorthSouthEastWest was conceived and organized by the British Council and The Climate Group to raise awareness and stimulate debate across the region about the causes of, and problems associated with, climate change and the energy challenges facing the world's greatest cities, as well as to promote solutions to the general public.

Ten of the world's leading photographers were commissioned from the Magnum Photographic Agency to capture images from diverse countries around the globe, to illustrate not only the impacts of climate change, but also the solutions which are being implemented to reduce carbon emissions in communities from the North, South, East, and West corners of the globe. This has produced some inspiring images, which detail the resourceful ways in which these communities have adapted.

The exhibition, which became a prominent landmark when launched in Trafalgar Square, London, in 2005, and which was shown in Gleneagles at the G8 Summit, has already visited Yemen, Kuwait and Oman on its tour of the region, which will be end in Bahrain in April 2007.

NorthSouthEastWest is part of ZeroCarbonCity, a British Council global campaign to raise awareness of climate change and energy challenges around the World.

The opening ceremony will take place on February 28, 2007, and will be attended by VIPs, senior British Council staff and other invited guests.

About NorthSouthEastWest

The exhibition, created by the British Council and The Climate Group and featuring 10 climate issues, in 12 locations by 10 Magnum photographers, opened in London in March 2005 and will travel to around 70 countries, with some countries already having reported visitor numbers in excess of 10,000.

The exhibition shows real examples of the changing global climate with visible examples from melting glaciers in Greenland to extreme weather events and environmental refugees from China, India and Africa. The exhibition also examines poor urban air quality, lack of available water, and impacts on biodiversity, as well as energy efficiency and renewable energy, fuel cell technology, carbon capture, storage and offsetting, and emissions trading. Finally, it looks at people; the faces and voices that are making a difference to the changing global climate.

About ZeroCarbonCity

ZeroCarbonCity is the British Council's two-year global campaign to raise awareness about climate change and the energy challenges facing the world's cities.

A ZeroCarbonCity is one which is emission-free and thus does not contribute to global warming. The ZeroCarbonCity campaign therefore shifts the emphasis away from climate change impacts and inter-governmental negotiations, towards mitigation, adaptation and practical measures that people can adopt.

An increasing number of the world's population are living in cities, and a significant part of climate change is affected by the actions of people in these cities, which is why the British Council is running the ZeroCarbonCity campaign which concentrates on the relationship between climate change and cities.
