- United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, February 27 - 2007 at 13:20
- PRESS RELEASE
The forthcoming DIFC Gulf Art Fair will offer an exceptional three-day educational programme designed and delivered by Sotheby's Institute of Art during the event from 8-10 March 2007.
Designed for visitors interested in contemporary art and collecting contemporary art, the DIFC Gulf Art Fair education programme will cover numerous aspects of contemporary art, art investments and trends in the contemporary art market with a special emphasis on artistic developments since the 1960s. The three-day education programme will enable artists, curators, gallery owners and experts in the field to share their knowledge during seminars, presentations and conversations and also to take exclusive guided tours of the DIFC Gulf Art Fair and art galleries across Dubai.
"In putting together the DIFC Gulf Art Fair, we have come across a growing appetite for information on trends and analysis of the contemporary segment of the art market, as well as a demand for information on how to assess and begin collecting contemporary art. Sotheby's Institute of Art has designed a comprehensive three -day education programme that will offer visitors to the DIFC Gulf Art Fair a unique and incisive insight into the workings of the contemporary art world," said Mr. John Martin, Director, DIFC Gulf Art Fair.
The first day of the education program will include presentations on the contemporary art market scene and financial aspects, laws and regulations within the international art market. The second day of the program will include an open forum on contemporary Arab art, a panel discussion about Emerging art in new markets, presentations on the evolution and understanding of contemporary Iranian and Chinese art, and a brief overview on Indian art by a specialist. The final day of the programme will provide insight on public, private and corporate art collections.
"The inaugural DIFC Gulf Art Fair will further encourage the UAE's development as an international art capital. Education is a fundamental element of market growth and Sotheby's Institute of Art is delighted to be playing such a strategic role in the first-ever DIFC Gulf Art Fair," said Lyn Calzia, Sotheby's Institute of Art.

Sotheby's Institute of Art with centres in London, New York and Singapore, is a private limited company with around 250 students a year studying and researching into subjects in art history and preparing students for careers in the international art world (started in 1969). Formerly a part of Sotheby's auction house, the Institute always aimed to bring a true understanding of fine and decorative arts to a global audience, thereby enhancing individual appreciation and understanding of an essential part of civilisation. No less than a hundred people working at Sotheby's have taken a course at one of the Institutes, either in London or New York. The essence of the Institute's teaching approach is to work directly with the art object so that students can develop a discerning and critical eye. This is a key differentiator in the Institute's educational approach. This "hands-on" philosophy means that students learn through actual first-hand examination of works of art, design and craftsmanship in the galleries and museums of each city and in private collections. The close examination at first hand of works of art is the cornerstone of Sotheby's Institute of Art's approach to teaching - whether at postgraduate or undergraduate level.
