HRH The Prince of Wales previews pioneering international climate change exhibition in Abu Dhabi
- United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, February 28 - 2007 at 10:53
- PRESS RELEASE
The British Council's international exhibition "NorthSouthEastWest" at Al Khubairat School, Abu Dhabi, received a special visitor today ahead of its official opening at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation tomorrow (February 28, 2007).
NorthSouthEastWest is a unique touring photographic exhibition, conceived and organized by the British Council and The Climate Group to raise awareness and stimulate debate across the region about the causes of, and problems associated with, climate change and the energy challenges facing the world's greatest cities, as well as to promote solutions to the general public.
Ten of the world's leading photographers were commissioned from the Magnum Photographic Agency to capture images from diverse countries around the globe, to illustrate not only the impacts of climate change, but also the solutions which are being implemented to reduce carbon emissions in communities from the North, South, East, and West corners of the globe. This has produced some inspiring images, which detail the resourceful ways in which these communities have adapted.
Children from Al Khubairat School created their own interpretations of climate change ahead of the royal visit, and HRH The Prince of Wales was clearly impressed with their work.
Rob Lynes, Regional Director for the British Council in the Middle East, explains that NorthSouthEastWest is an important part of the British Council's ZeroCarbonCity global campaign: "The British Council is delighted to bring this important exhibition to the Middle East and we would especially like to thank HRH The Prince of Wales for his support. As a respected advocate on environmental issues in the UK and around the world, it is entirely appropriate that he was able to preview this international exhibition.
Rob Lynes adds, "NorthSouthEastWest was originally conceived by the British Council and The Climate Group to highlight the issues of climate change and energy challenges facing cities around the world. These are questions of increasing importance for all communities, in an increasingly globalised world, solutions to which must be found."
The UAE exhibition will officially open in Abu Dhabi on February 28, 2007, and will bring together the work of ten of the world's best photographers. NorthSouthEastWest will run at the Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi until March 8, 2007 when it will move to Fujairah, to be opened on March 11, 2007, followed by Ras al Khaimah on March 20, 2007, and Dubai on March 29, 2007.

Notes and media contacts
About NorthSouthEastWestThe exhibition, created by the British Council and The Climate Group and featuring 10 climate issues, in 12 locations by 10 Magnum photographers, opened in London in March 2005 and will travel to around 70 countries, with some countries already having reported visitor numbers in excess of 10,000.
The exhibition, which became a prominent landmark when launched in Trafalgar Square, London, in 2005, and which was shown in Gleneagles at the G8 Summit, has already visited Yemen, Kuwait and Oman on its tour of the region, which will be end in Bahrain in April 2007.
The exhibition shows real examples of the changing global climate with visible examples from melting glaciers in Greenland to extreme weather events and environmental refugees from China, India and Africa. The exhibition also examines poor urban air quality, lack of available water, and impacts on biodiversity, as well as energy efficiency and renewable energy, fuel cell technology, carbon capture, storage and offsetting, and emissions trading. Finally, it looks at people; the faces and voices that are making a difference to the changing global climate.
About ZeroCarbonCity
ZeroCarbonCity is the British Council's two-year global campaign to raise awareness about climate change and the energy challenges facing the world's cities.
A ZeroCarbonCity is one which is emission-free and thus does not contribute to global warming. The ZeroCarbonCity campaign therefore shifts the emphasis away from climate change impacts and inter-governmental negotiations, towards mitigation, adaptation and practical measures that people can adopt.
An increasing number of the world's population are living in cities, and a significant part of climate change is affected by the actions of people in these cities, which is why the British Council is running the ZeroCarbonCity campaign which concentrates on the relationship between climate change and cities.
