The Group Security Reference Manual, as the publication is titled, provides information based on international standards and security industry best practices. It uses a benchmarked, proven methodology that has also been adopted by other large UAE organisations.

Releasing the manual, Mahmood Amin - CEO, Group Security & Dubai Security Services (DSS), said: "The world is full of threats. We face them every day. They can change their nature and their immediacy every year, or perhaps even by the hour. Spillage of toxic waste is a threat that can seriously affect people and the environment.

'Theft can take many forms, from material assets to intellectual property. Criminal damage can stop an organization operating. There are threats to individuals, organisations and governments. There are threats from simple mischief-makers and hardened criminals.

"The Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation recognized this changing threat environment and has taken exacting measures to ensure that none of its departments would be found wanting while carrying out their responsibilities with respect to the safeguarding of property and life from any threat. A regimen of measures is being introduced to enhance security across all Group sites, developments and facilities."

The manual will be complimented by the introduction of regulations to ensure that the standards and rules in the Group Reference manual are being adhered to at the concept, design and construction stages of the projects.

All developments will be accredited with a Certificate of Security Compliance.

The regulations are expected to be applied to a wide range of constructions - warehouses, industrial plants, residential units, commercial spaces and the hospitality sector.

Regular checks will be made to ensure that security remains "fit for purpose" - in other words, ready to meet the threats as they emerge.
