The IX Congress of the Middle East African Council of Ophthalmology concludes scientific sessions

The IX Congress of the Middle East African Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) concluded its scientific session here today.
Shedding light on the Congress sessions, Dr. Ala'a Al Danasoury, Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee discussed a presentation by Dr. George Waring on the modern customized topographically-guided LASIK treatment of myopic astigmatism adding that Dr. Knorz dwelt on the techniques of complementing the use of laser with the transplant of lenses to correct the far sight cases and non-adjustment with shortsightedness. Dr. Knorz explained that these helped in both far sight and short sight cases in addition to the disposal of the eye glasses.
Dr. Al Danasoury went on to say that another session called " Cornea Surgery Outcomes" was briefed by Dr. V. Thompson (USA) on the use of Femtosecond laser in the treatment of corneal disease and in the surgey of total and partial cornea, and also the possibility of applying this technology in surgeries and the transplant of lenses inside the cornea.
Dr. Al Danasoury went on to say that Dr. Mohammed Hantera (KSA) presented a study on the use of Ferrara intrastromal ring segments for correction of primary ectatic corneal disorders that leads to good medical results and which helps in the absense of any need for an operation to transplant a cornea in the worst cases.
Dr. Al Danasoury added that in the session, Dr. Hamid Taha (KSA) elaborated on the the use of a amniotic menbrane transplant for management of the cases of corneal injury coupled with limbal stem cell deficiency and he stressed that the transplant in these cases has achieved good results.
The chairman of the Scientific Committee concluded by saying that the internationally acclaimed Argentinian scientist R. Zaldivar presented a lecture on the most recent trends in Phaco, adding that te scientist elaborated on his vast experience in the transplant of lenses and pin pointed their benefits and shortcomings.
A number of ophthalmologists shed light on the Phaco surgeries they have conducted, stressing the importance of such surgical treatment.
