Climate change is top of the agenda for journalists of tomorrow

The British Council joined forces with the Ministry of Environment and Water in Yemen to deliver the seminars from March 25-28, 2007. The seminars were led by two UK trainers and were attended by school students, environment activists, and professional journalists from the Gulf States of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia as well as representatives from Yemen.

"The purpose of these workshops," says Elizabeth White, Director of the British Council in Yemen, "was to provide young journalists with some guidance in the art of writing newspaper reports and to raise their awareness on climate change issues."

"The Ministry of Water and Environment recognizes the importance of activities like these in raising the awareness of environmental issues among young people, and as a result, has actively participated in this seminar." Commented Dr. Hussein Al-Gunied, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Water and Environment.

Khadija Al-Sarhi of the British Council expressed her thanks to the large number of people who were involved in putting the programme together. "It is an excellent opportunity for us to do more work with the Ministry of Water and Environment in Sana'a," she said. "This programme has been a very fruitful venture, assisting environmental journalism and co-operation throughout the region, and further consolidating the strong ties between the UK, Yemen and the Gulf States."
