TECOM Investments' blood donation drive draws unprecedented response
- United Arab Emirates: Sunday, April 08 - 2007 at 14:38
- PRESS RELEASE
The blood donation drive organised on 28 February and 1 March by TECOM Investments and Al Wasl Hospital, in aid of children suffering from Thalassaemia , registered a 50 per cent increase in response from the earlier initiative held in 2006.
The blood donation initiative is organized by the Corporate Social Responsibility team of TECOM Investments. Since its inception in June 2001, the drive has been held twice a year. TECOM Investments, however, plans to increase the frequency to three times a year starting 2007.
Abdullatif Almulla, CEO of TECOM Investments said: "As a socially responsible corporate entity, we believe it is important to encourage community participation in such humanitarian initiatives. Through this drive, we hope to minimise the trauma of Thalassaemic patients."
Due to the overwhelming response of the free zone community, several donors, waiting for their turn even after the set time, were asked by the organisers to return for the next drive scheduled in July 2007.
Thalassaemia is passed from parent to child and is a common inherited blood disorder in the UAE. This condition is caused by changes to the genes that control the production of haemoglobin. Changes affecting haemoglobin result in severe anaemia which makes thalassaemic patients dependent on regular blood transfusions.
