Three Journalists selected for overseas training under Tatweer's 'Science Writer Fellowship Programme'

Dubai Healthcare City, a member of Tatweer, and Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR), in collaboration with Dubai Press Club, announced the names of three journalists who will be travelling to Boston, USA, to receive training in science and medical reporting under the Science Writer Fellowship Programme.

Dubai Press Club and DHFMR received over 20 applications under the programme which was initiated by Tatweer, a subsidiary of Dubai Holding, with the aim of raising standards of health and science journalism in the region.

Abrar Samih Mikkawi, from Gulf Today, Alia Al Theeb from Gulf News and Nadeya Ibrahim from Al Bayan were chosen as their articles demonstrated strong writing skills, and a high interest level in healthcare.

The winners were selected by a jury comprising Mona Al Marri, President of Dubai Press Club, Abdullatif Al Sayegh, CEO of Arab Media Group and Hamad Huraiz, Executive Director of the International Media Production Zone.

Announcing the winners, Noora Al Abbar, Tatweer's Marketing and Communications Manager, said: "We would like to congratulate Abrar, Alia and Nadeya on being selected to undergo five-day training at the prestigious Harvard Medical School.

"We are sure this training will provide them with intensive skills needed for accurate, professional and reliable reporting on science and health issues. We also hope they will be able to apply this learning to the regional environment."

The winners will leave for Boston, USA, on May 13 hosted by Harvard Medical School's (HMS) Office of Public Affairs. During the five day programme the Science Writer Fellows will interact with their Boston-based counterparts, and gain interview opportunities with leading Harvard Medical School administrators and HMS faculty researchers and physicians. Visits to hospitals and research facilities connected with Harvard Medical School are also part of the agenda.

Details of the Science Writer Fellowship Programme were announced on 15 November, 2006, at the Dubai Press Club by senior officials of the Dubai Healthcare City and Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research.
