Intel Chairman to visit Lebanon
- Lebanon: Wednesday, April 11 - 2007 at 14:46
- PRESS RELEASE
As part of Intel's efforts to work with communities around the world on technology to benefit citizens and as a representative of the "Partnership for Lebanon", Intel Chairman, Craig Barrett, will visit Lebanon this month.
"I am impressed with the incredible resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of the Lebanese people," said Barrett. "We are working with both the private and public sectors to support efforts in education and access to technology as part of the effort to provide more opportunities for the people of Lebanon."
In late September 2006, four executives of leading U.S. companies announced the creation of the 'Partnership for Lebanon' to provide critically needed resources to assist in the reconstruction effort in Lebanon. As part of this effort, Intel has been working with NGOs, the government, the technology community and universities including the American University of Beirut and Lebanese American University on initiatives that bring Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools and practices to some of the areas of the country which were most affected. These programs are designed to stimulate private sector job creation; energize education projects across schools, universities and entrepreneurs; develop the technology infrastructure and connect communities and government.
"The Partnership members understand that this is a long-term commitment. We have to invest in the people, the infrastructure and collaborate with government and public sector bodies to stimulate economic growth through enhanced ICT connectivity," Barrett added.
Barrett toured the Middle East last December as part of his annual visit in his role as Intel Chairman and Chairman of the UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development. During the trip he was able see digital make-overs in South Africa and Egypt as well as celebrate the success of programs such as Intel® Teach Program in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
