The positive sales result was led by the increasing demand for Ford's SUV models and a number of passenger cars across the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brands.

Mondeo, Ford's mid-size passenger car, proved to be the most popular as sales tripled reaching more than 200 per cent. Mercury Grand Marquis followed with a 37 per cent increase in volume, while the Ford Crown Victoria registered nearly 10 per cent growth. Overall passenger cars sales were up almost 30 per cent for the first quarter of the year.

With its superior and class-exclusive features, the bold and full-size Expedition SUV posted a 70 per cent increase over the same period last year mainly driven by the new 2007 model and the introduction of the all-new extended EL model. Customers have likewise recognized the rich mix of standard features as well as class-leading safety features and driving dynamics of compact-size Escape and mid-size SUV Explorer pushing sales higher by 23 per cent and about 20 per cent, respectively.

"This ongoing growth is testament to the region's consumers' growing preference to our products as we offer them not only world-class models, but also class leading technologies and driving dynamics, and the best standard features, all at the best value. The continued growth inspires us to roll out more of these outstanding models and to continue supporting our dealers' commitment in providing excellent products and services to their local customers," said Hussein Murad, Sales & Marketing director of Ford Middle East.

Since its introduction to the Middle East in 2000, Mondeo has been a hit with retail and fleet customers alike. Mondeo offers class leading German technology and driving dynamics. For 2007, it adds the Titanium to the range of trims already available such as the entry level Ambiente, sporty Trend and luxurious Ghia.

In the coming months, Ford's lineup is expected to get further boost with the introduction of the exciting Edge and the Sport Trac sports utility truck. The two utility vehicles form part of the largest and most diverse utility vehicle line up in the Middle East offered by one single brand. The Ford utility vehicle lineup also includes the Escape (compact SUV), Explorer (mid-size SUV), Expedition (full-size SUV) and the Expedition EL (extended wheelbase).
