DM to mark World Heritage Day

Dubai Municipality will mark the World Heritage Day, which falls on April 18 every year, with several activities focusing on the significance of preserving local heritage.

As part of the activities planned for marking the day, a seminar will be held Tuesday, 17 April at Dubai Municipality Staff Club in Al Jaddaf with prominent personalities concerned with the country's efforts in heritage conservation attending.

According to Ahmed Mahmood, Head of Historical Buildings Section at the municipality, the seminar will be attended by Sheikha Abdullah Al Mutairi and Prof. Ali Salih of Juma Al-Majid Cultural & Heritage Center who will talk about the centre's role in preserving intellectual heritage of the country, Ali Al Matrooshi, Director of Ajman Museum, who will shed light on the ancient religious schools of the United Arab Emirates during the first half of the 20th century, Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Director of Heritage Department, Sharjah, who will give a lecture on the UAE's experience in the field of non-materialistic heritage, Dr. Selah Shirzad, Arabic Calligraphy Expert, who will talk about the heritage elements in Arabic calligraphy, and Dr. Sebah Mishtat of Ajman University, whose lecture will throw light on the unseen aspects of the Yemeni architecture. Rashad Bukhash, Director of General Projects Department at Dubai Municipality will talk about the significance of architectural conservation in the UAE.

Other activities to mark the day include a technical workshop for students at Bait Al Ammara (House of Architecture) in Shindagha on Wednesday (18 April) and a heritage exhibition at the UAE University on Monday (23 April) with students from the Department of History showcasing their projects in the field of heritage conservation.
