The latest Volvo truck range can now be equipped with a unique I-Shift transmission along with the powerful D13 engine, geared up for 'Total Performance'.

The I-Shift automated gearchanging system combines the robustness of the manual gearbox with the comfort and convenience of an automatic shifting mechanism. I-Shift is basically a 12-speed electronically controlled mechanical splitter and range-change gearbox designed for optimum gearchanging. This new unique transmission is now available in the Volvo FH and Volvo FM series trucks.

Speaking on the new technology, Joe Lahoud, Divisional Manager, Truck & Bus Division - FAMCO, said 'Our customers can now enjoy the benefits of the I-Shift transmission for vehicles up to 100 tons GCW. This new solution can save a driver a couple of thousand gearchanges per day, making driving comfortable and fuel-efficient, while reducing the load on both clutch and brake components.'

The new I-Shift transmission is more compact than its predecessor, making it possible to use with shorter wheelbases. It is also lighter despite its capacity for high loads and gross combination weights. Furthermore, it has capacity for up to 2,500 Nm, which fits perfectly with the high torque Volvo D13 engine. Lower friction losses also make it more fuel-efficient. The new I-Shift offers unparalleled driveability, and effectively overcomes various elements of driver error.

FAMCO also officially launches the latest Volvo D13 engine. The higher power and torque gives the engine a broader range of applications, and makes it even more suitable for heavy jobs, such as construction operations or driving with heavy trailers. The new D13 is a 13 litre 6 cylinder in-line, turbocharged diesel engine with intercooler. Manufactured in Volvo's Swedish factory, the modern design includes an integrated cylinder head, overhead camshaft, 4-valve technology and electronically controlled unit injectors. With up to 200Nm more torque than its predecessor (the popular D12 engine), the D13 engine can cope with much steeper hills without the need for excessive gearchanging.
'The Volvo trucks distributed by FAMCO in the UAE have been tailor-made for the region' added Joe Lahoud. 'We are confident that these highly efficient I-shift equipped trucks will be extremely popular in the UAE. Based on global success, we believe we shall see a sharp increase in the number of I-Shift users in the next two to three years,' he added.

'Together, the D13 engine and new I-shift transmission form a very powerful driveline providing the opportunity for increased productivity with low fuel consumption. With these superior features, the latest Volvo trucks will continue to be one of the most cost effective and reliable trucks in the UAE,' Lahoud concluded.
