Toyota claims top spot

Japan's Toyota has become the world's top carmaker, overtaking US rival General Motors, the BBC reported, citing a company official. Toyota sold 2.348m vehicles in Q1 2007, while GM is estimated to have sold 2.26m units. Japanese carmakers have been making strong inroads into the large US market on the back of a new range of fuel efficient models.
