The Fairmont Dubai answers mayday call from 'Angel Appeal'

The appropriately named 'Flying Angel', is currently operational off the coast of Fujariah, providing support for some of the estimated 140,000 seafarers whose ships visit the East Coast anchorages of the UAE each year.

Kent Cooper, Regional Director of Sales & Marketing, The Fairmont Dubai, commented, "We have been affiliated with the 'Angel Appeal' since its inception in February 2006 and we are proud to continue our association, it's an integral part of our corporate social responsibility. Although the boat is now operational, the appeal committee still requires continued support to cover potential repairs and essential operating costs."

The event will take place in the impressive marble floored Barajeel Ballroom, the scene of some of Dubai's finest banquets and most memorable themed parties. Tickets are priced at just AED 300 per person which includes cocktails, appetisers, and an open buffet with live cooking stations.

The theme for the event is always a closely-guarded secret, but Cooper added, "Last year we chose a construction theme, complete with scaffolding and hotel staff in overalls and hard hats. We set the benchmark for themed Galas some years ago and this year will be yet another memorable occasion."

Reverend Stephen Miller, Mission to Seafarers, Dubai commented, "Last year tickets were like gold dust and this year has been no exception. The local community has once again shown their support for what is now a permanent fixture and red letter date on Dubai's social calendar."

The initial aim to raise over US $1 million before the end of 2006 to build and equip the 'Flying Angel', was achieved on time and HRH Prince Charles, even took time out of his hectic schedule to inaugurate the boat during a special ceremony on Dubai Creek in February. The 'Flying Angel' was officially launched into service last month by Sheikh Saleh Bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Chairman of the Department of Industry and Economics of Fujairah, and Chairman of Fujairah Ports Authority.

The customised boat built by Albwardy Marine in Al Jadaf, Dubai features an Internet Café, a library with both educational and fictional DVDs and books, a medical clinic with a fully trained paramedic, access to telecommunications, and pastoral and spiritual support from a dedicated Welfare Officer.

Every week for 72 hours, 'Flying Angel' sets sail, out to the ships using the East Coast Anchorage, allowing seafarers to step off their ships for a period of rest and relaxation. With 99% of all UAE imports arriving by sea, all UAE residents have a vested interest in ensuring the welfare of seafarers.

Many seafarers anchored off the UAE's East Coast cannot afford or do not get the opportunity to come ashore and are unable to communicate with family and friends at home for weeks, sometimes months. This can lead to feelings of extreme isolation and loneliness, even desperation. The 'Flying Angel' is designed to alleviate these feelings.

"We are extremely grateful that The Fairmont Dubai has agreed once again to host this special evening" added Reverend Miller. "The proceeds will undoubtedly help to keep the 'Flying Angel' in service for some time to come."
