The new system, HIRAS (Healthcare Information Reporting and Analysis System), will contribute to protecting the privacy of patient data in DHCC's Electronic Health Record.

"Personal information is a sensitive issue for patients and one that involves great responsibility on the part of healthcare providers," said Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashimi, CEO of DHCC. "Our acquisition of HIRAS and its contribution to offering a feasible security process reflects our commitment to provide patients with the peace of mind of knowing their health information is in safe hands."

Moreover, HIRAS will make patient records available at the touch of a button and will enable experts to quickly diagnose and plan treatment, which supports DHCC's ambition of establishing an innovative and efficient medical practice in Dubai.

HIRAS' development is a response to global patterns in the healthcare industry, seen moving closer to electronic health information systems. Within this context, the confidentiality and security of data takes centre stage as an important area of concern for both healthcare providers and patients.

In recognition of the global trend, DHCC held Patient Data Protection Day, on April 10, in collaboration with the American Healthcare Information Management Association (AHIMA), to educate DHCC healthcare operators and professionals on patient data protection and to offer guidance on implementing policies to tighten security.

The event also highlighted the advantages of electronic health systems as well as associated risks, given the possibility private information could be misused or disclosed to unauthorized individuals or parties.

On the issue, Dr. Al Hashimi assured that all patient data will be completely secure with only authorized personnel being privy to information. She commented: "The degree of risk is controllable through the implementation and enforcement of strict regulation, rules and policies, to which DHCC is dedicated."

Additionally, DHCC organized a seminar on patient privacy at the Mayo Conference Hall. A panel of experts including Alexandra Tarazi, Director of Information Technology, Dubai Healthcare City; Louise McKenzie, Director, Legal Department, DHCC; Bruce Solomon, Project Director, Dubai University Hospital; and Dr. Sarper Tanli, Director of Harvard Medical International, was present during the seminar. The panel members addressed the concerns of healthcare operators on confidentiality in the age of electronic data sharing.

DHCC distributed several leaflets and posters during the event to educate patients, healthcare providers and industry professionals on confidentiality as an important component in its strategy to managing and, ideally, eliminating any associated risks.
