The program, held in collaboration with the BDF Hospital which is a designated International Training Centre for the American Heart Association, is a requirement for students of all affiliate universities of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI-Dublin). It includes both theoretical and practical training in Basic Life Support (BLS) and operation of automated external defibrillators.
This course is designed for medical students in their junior cycle of the medical Programme and introduces them to the basics of BLS procedures. They learned about cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the workings of the heart and the process of defibrillation.
The program will be followed by a comprehensive course on BLS in the intermediate cycle and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) in the senior cycle.
The Heart Saver Course was conducted by Dr. Mary Tareif, a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Mohammed Bin Khalifa Cardiac Centre and a team of instructors, all certified by the American Heart Association. It was held at the RCSI-MUB, which is recognized as an official training site for the BDF International Training Centre.
'With this course, the students took early steps towards gaining the knowledge and the skills they need to advise their future patients correctly and to perform basic life support procedures,' said Prof. Sameer Otoom, Head of the School of Medicine. Most of the students enrolled at our university will likely work at hospitals in the region, strengthening its healthcare infrastructure,' he continued.
Heart problems are a major medical issue in Bahrain and the rest of the GCC countries and one of the main causes of death among adults. In 2002 and according to World Health Organization statistics, 34% of deaths in Bahrain were related to cardiovascular diseases. The students all received official HeartSaver certification from the American Heart Association on completion of the course.
