The four-day travel and tourism expo starts on May 1 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, and will go on till May 4. The sponsorship of the ATM media centre by DSS for the second consecutive year is part of its commitment to provide media support facilities to journalists and reporters during the exhibition.

Organisers of this year's ATM are expecting around 340 exhibitors from 60 countries in addition to around a thousand journalists and reporters from major regional and international media organisations.

"By sponsoring the ATM media centre, DSS reiterates its commitment in providing media support services for the hundreds of journalists who will be present at the venue. Keeping in mind the number of visitors, we have equipped the media centre with the latest technology to enable the media to send and receive news and information instantaneously. Journalists will also be pleasantly surprised to see the media centre designed to resemble Dubai's landscape in summer, complete with a beach, palm trees, and aimed at highlighting DSS celebrations,"

said Laila Suhail, DSS Executive Project Director.

The sponsorship of the ATM media centre is one among the many initiatives undertaken by the DSS Office to promote Dubai Summer Surprises regionally and globally. The presence of international exhibitors will provide DSS the platform to directly communicate with travel and tour operators and market itself as a leading global summer event.

Apart from sponsoring the media centre, DSS will also feature prominently in the ATM under the auspices of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing at the Zabeel Hall. The participation aims to highlight the combined DSS characteristics of shopping, winning, and entertainment.

DSS celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and is gearing up to unveil a host of innovative and exciting family entertainment events for visitors, tourists, and residents. Beginning on June 21, the summer event will run until August 31, offering ten weeks of Surprises and activities for every visitor and every family.

Launched in 1998, Dubai Summer Surprises was conceived as the foremost family entertainment event during the summer season for the whole of GCC. Targeted at visitors from outside the UAE and within the country, DSS has been a major entertainment and shopping attraction since its inception and witnessed 1,875,000 visitors in the year 2006 compared to 600,000 in 1998. The event has succeeded in positioning Dubai as the leading summer destination in the region.

Organised by government departments with the cooperation of the public sector, the ten-week event is a celebration of different surprises that offer visitors and shoppers the perfect family entertainment opportunity and the ideal combination of shopping and adventure. Over the years DSS has hosted numerous surprises such as Food, Water, Global, Ice, Flower, Sports, Heritage, Arts, Techno, Cartoons, Colour, Sweets, Knowledge, and Back-2-School. The summer event lays special emphasis on children, who are provided all the opportunities to hone their skills while enjoying a fun-packed ten weeks of activities. DSS also has its own mascot, Modhesh, the ever smiling brand ambassador who embodies everything that the event stands for - fun, excitement, brightness and unlimited joy for children.

Dubai Summer Surprises as a venture has contributed significantly to the economy of Dubai and continues to do so by enhancing different economic sectors during a lean period of economic activity in summer. An increase in visitor expenditure from AED 850 million in 1998 to AED 2.57 billion in 2006 is a clear indication of the event's ability to drive economic growth during summer. Into its tenth year, Dubai Summer Surprises has come a long way by building on the successes of the previous editions and aims to create a benchmark for future years to provide the three most important characteristics of the event - shopping, winning, and entertainment.
