The Sony Science Shows targeted at Grade 4 students from Dubai schools will be held on 27th, 28th and 29th of May, 2007 at the Knowledge Village Auditorium.
The Sony Science Shows, witnessed last year by over 2700 students, is a hands-on experience that makes science learning an interactive adventure. The one-hour show, hosted by Japanese scientific entertainer, Mr. Soichi Nishimura, converts classroom theories into participative experiments, on subjects like conduction, air pressure, flight dynamics etc.
'It has been our endeavor as Dubai Schools Agency to encourage our faculty to focus on unconventional approaches for teaching and learning. The Sony Science Show extends this thought into reality and therefore, we are very pleased to extend our association with Sony for this innovative corporate initiative. I attended the Science Shows organized last year, and the children's excitement and response captured everything that is great about learning textbook lessons in an unconventional fun environment, said a spokesperson of Dubai Schools Agency.
The Sony Science Shows in Dubai are a part of Sony's Global Community initiatives directed at children's education, such as the Sony ExploraScience Museum, the Sony Eco Plaza and the Sony Foundation for Education in Japan and the Sony Wonder Technology Lab in New York. In the Middle East, this is extended through the Sony Creative Science Awards in Saudi Arabia and the Sony Science Shows in the UAE and Iran. This is the second edition of the Sony Science Shows in Dubai; and the Sony Creative Science Award was organized successfully for the third consecutive year in Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Osamu Miura, Managing Director, Sony Gulf FZE, said, 'With a fourth of the population in the UAE belonging to the age group of 8-12 years, we decided that any social contribution initiative in the UAE must be targeted to this age-group. We believe that instilling and nurturing a sense of curiosity and scientific thinking among these young people is very important for the future of society of this great country'.
The debut Sony Science Show held last year in Dubai was received with a high level of enthusiasm by teachers and students alike. Sony received several letters of appreciation in which teachers described the excitement among their students both during and after the show. Students from some of the schools described the whole experience to their classmates and even attempted to replicate some of the science demonstrations such dynamics of the boomerang.
Japanese scientific entertainer, Mr. Soichi Nishimura's personal style emphasizes the spirit of freedom and open-mindedness. Driven with a personal passion for demystifying science for young minds, Nishimura travels around the world to entertain and teach children the magical world of science. The one-hour show has been produced by taking into account the 4th grade curriculum and simple experiments are used to demonstrate the basic theories of static electricity, rotational motion, properties of air etc.
Participation in the show is through invitation extended to schools and is free of charge. At this stage, many schools have already confirmed their participation. The Dubai Schools Agency and the Sony Science Show Organizing Committee are continuing to approach the school network in Dubai with participation details.
