250 high school students contributed to Effat Science and Engineering Fair

250 students from 13 private schools in Jeddah contributed to Effat College's First Science and Engineering Fair.

The theme of the fair that took place on campus on May 2nd, 2007 was "Shaping the Future." The event occurred under the patronage of HRH Princess Loulwah Al-Faisal, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees & the General Supervisor of Effat College, and was attended by Dean of Effat College, Dr.Haifa Jamal Al-Lail, faculty members, and students.

An exciting and challenging Quiz Contest that examined students' knowledge in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry occurred between the students of the following schools; My Little House, Al-Aqeek, Dawhat Al-Gazira, Happy House, and Dar Al-Fikr. After ruthless competition between the contestants, Al-Aqeek School won 1st place, My Little House won 2nd place, and Dar Al-Fikr Schools won 3rd place. The winners received valuable gifts.

The main highlight of the Fair was a Project Competition. Students from My Little House, Al-Aqeek, Dawhat Al-Gazira, Happy House, Dar Al-Fikr, and Al-Salhiya presented several creative projects that exhibited students' awareness of the problems that inflict Saudi Arabia and the world. One of the projects presented by My Little House entitled, "Poverty in Africa" described a Black-American's return to his roots in Africa and the poverty and destitution that he witnessed there. Dawhat Al-Gazira presented another innovative project titled, "Solar Cell" that showed how the Arab countries can change sunlight into electric energy.

The judging panel that consisted of four professors from king Abdul Aziz University; Dr.Sawsan Raheim, Dr.Jihan Abdul Raouf, Dr.Fatma Ba-Othman, and Dr.Marwa Khafaji admitted that they were so impressed by the caliber and creativity of the projects that it was hard to decide the winners. Dawhat Al-Gazira won first prize for "Solar Cell Project," and Happy House won second prize for "The Production of Energy from the Movement of Ions." Dar Al-Fikr won third place for "Urban Design" presented by Ms. Jawaher Al-Bakri. Ms.Al-Bakri explained, "My project is a design of a neighborhood that has all the facilities within walking distance from each other to encourage people to lead healthier lives and reduce the quantity of pollution in Jeddah."

Several prominent institutions sponsored this event. Microsoft was the Gold sponsor, and LG. was the Silver Sponsor. Friends of the Symposium included Toshiba-ABM Olyan, Swiss Airlines, Arab Engineers, and Applebee's.
