Philips Lighting at the Light Middle East Exhibition showcase to a broad audience in the Middle East that when it comes to enhancing architecture with lighting, Philips is the only partner who understands the needs of architects, interior and landscape architects and lighting designers.

Those road shows present new exhibits by leading architects and lighting designers that express their creative visions on architectural lighting solutions. The two containers have attracted up to now more than 3,000 visitors each.

A third container has been designed in Dubai by Rogier van der Heide from Arup Lighting especially for Light Middle East.

"Architects like to push the limits of what is feasible, they like to experiment everything that is new that can help them realize their ideas and aspirations. We fully support them by using all our lighting expertise and technology, and by following all the construction details of their designs. That is to say, by building as exactly as possible what they had in their minds" said DP Smedema , General Manager , Philips Lighting Middle East.

"In each container, the final concept in action is inspiring and exciting in terms of technical realization and poetical content. They are an open invitation for people to become more than spectators, to experience lighting, feel light and space while playing the architects games".
These containers exemplify Philips Lighting's strong ambition towards innovative projects and its ongoing commitment to support its creative partners with innovations and expertise in architectural lighting" added DP Smedena.

Two of the containers: 'Strato- Sphere' and 'You make night time so much fun' were shipped from Europe and will be on display at Light Middle East Exhibition. While the third container 'Made in the Shade' was designed especially for this exhibition. 'Made in the Shade' showcases imaginative design concepts and presents certain technical challenges. Philips managed to translate those architectural visions into reality with fascinating and captivating results.

Container 1: "Made in the Shade"
Designer: Rogier van der Heide

Designer's concept:
The container "Made in the Shade" awakes and animates the child in all of us: invitation to play with the light effects on the luminous walls and to interact with the other visitors as they are playing at the same time. "Made in the Shade" is a so-called shadow room, a place where you can separate yourself from your most trustworthy companion: your shadow. "Made in the Shade" makes the impossible happen, and allows you to create your own shadow of any pose and then watch it from a distance!

Container 2: "Strato-Sphere"

Architects: Seel Bobsin Partner
Gunnar Seel, interior architect, designer
Kim Marc Bobsin, interior architect

Light does not make our world only visible to us, but also has the effect of influencing man on all conceivable levels of the rhythms of life: emotion, mood, sense of time, activity and thus the general sense of well being. We relate to nature through the dynamics of daylight with its ever-changing visual character.

The modular light system Strato brings this special character of outdoor lighting to indoors: Shops, showrooms, working areas and public spaces. Strato makes a positive contribution to our well being, health and emotional balance while enhancing motivation, productivity or simply pleasure.

Used luminaries: The Strato Units are special formed for this container. In this container Strato with T16(T5) 28W Lamps in red green blue (RGB)

Used controls:
Technology is controlled by Scenio 100 System over HFR 1-10V.
Push buttons in the floor switch change the color of the luminaries when people step on them. They generate a potential free contact to the MPI.
Via the software which scenes are activated can be defined if the contact is closed.
The link between the movement and the Scenio 100 is done via a digital input unit MPI.

Container 3: "You make night-time so much fun"

Designers: Gösta Wessel and Mårten Wessel

Designers' concept:
A colored surface is dramatically changed by the color of the light that illuminates it. Similar colors stand out and shine while dissimilar ones eclipse. "You make night-time so much fun" demonstrates how the interaction between colored surfaces and colored light can alter our perception of space.

The dark inside of a freight container makes an ideal setting for a research lab and the nearly monochromatic light from LED-technology brings new and greater possibilities for studying the subject.

In one static room, the changes of the light create three radically different spaces: expanding, contracting and defining. The viewer's position is the only thing actually moving.

Three spaces in one static room:
By using LED-lights in the primary colors red, green and blue, we get different enough color of light to create three unrelated surface patterns. Walls, ceiling and floor are painted in a red - green - blue pattern complemented with specially developed in-between colors of yellow, magenta and cyan where the patterns overlap. A mirror is placed in the back end of the space to make longer viewing distances possible.

The room itself is static except for the changes that come from the color of the light. The pictures show 3D-renditions from various places in the room.
