Team Building from the comfort of a theatre seat

  • Sunday, May 13 - 2007 at 10:34

What experience have you had of company training? Did it help you? Ever been on a team building exercise? Did you find it useful? Are you a team player anyway?

You may have had pleasant experiences in the past and may have benefited 100% from whatever course or courses you have attended, but for a moment, consider the plight of four middle management executives called Angus, Roy, Gordon and Neville. They have been sent on a team building exercise right in the middle of the Lake District - a beautiful part of the English countryside bordering Scotland. The Lake District boasts mountain peaks and beautiful lakes, large by English standards but tiny in comparison to Canada's Lake Superior. The largest lake in the Lake District, Lake Windemere is only 10.5 miles long whereas Lake Superior is a staggering 350 miles long. Anyway, Neville, Roy, Angus and Gordon are in a rowing boat, having left their team headquarters and are now rowing across Derwentwater in search of "treasure" by following clues given to them as part of their "team building exercise". Derwentwater is one of the smaller lakes at only 3 miles long, but nonetheless, our four intrepid heroes manage to sink their boat and become the first people ever to be shipwrecked in this stretch of water.

Cut off from the world (mobile phone is wet so doesn't work.... ) they reach dry land which is aptly named Neville's Island in memory of the team leader, Neville... Following clues from their treasure hunt, they decide that, by a stroke of luck, they are on the right island to get further clues. The trouble is there is no one else around... Are they the only ones who got the clue right and everyone else has followed a false trail? Or are they the only people who got the clue wrong and everyone else is where they should be?

This is the story behind a forthcoming comedy production "Neville's Island" to be staged at Crowne Plaza Dubai on 29th, 30th and 31st May and at The Club Abu Dhabi on 24th May.

What should have been a bonding process for Gordon, Angus, Roy and Neville turns into a muddy, bloody fight for survival because when night sets in, strange things happen out in the wilds. And what took place on Neville's Island that foggy November weekend, none of this particular middle-management team would ever forget.

If you liked the TV series "The Office", you'll love this production. Just imagine David Brent, Gavin, Tim and Keith stranded on an island for two days, not only having to survive the elements, but having to survive each other!!
