RTA launches Salik website for Dubai toll system

The toll system, 'Salik,' will begin operating on two key Dubai roads - the Al Ittihad Road leading to and from the Garhoud Bridge and Sheikh Zayed road near Mall of the Emirates - as part of RTA's effort to effectively manage traffic in Dubai and minimise congestion.

Engineer Maitha Bin Adai, CEO of the RTA's Roads and Transport Authority, said the website launch marks the beginning of the Authority's drive to boost awareness and understanding of the system prior to its rollout.

"The Salik.ae website is primarily an educational tool, to provide members of the public with a thorough understanding of the system, its operation and its benefits," she said. The site will eventually explain how to register for the service, where to buy the sensor cards and recharge credit, and will also explain the RTA's long-term goals for this service, she added.

"Dubai's toll system will be on par with international standards, and is a necessary move following the heavy demand on the road infrastructure," said Engineer Maitha. "This is a safe and easy move for all."

The website will also serve as an interactive channel between the RTA and members of the public, who will be able to post questions about the new system and the technologies it uses. The site will be updated regularly to reflect progress on the toll network and feature a comprehensive 'Frequently Asked Questions' section.

The Salik service seeks to promote the use of alternative transportation including public transit and car pooling to reduce pressure on Dubai's road infrastructure, particularly in its downtown and other busy areas, and reduce noise and air pollution.

The system also fulfils the Dubai Strategic Plan which stipulates that RTA will provide an integrated road and transportation system that will facilitate people and goods movement while improving safety levels. The Plan requires the RTA to address current congestion problems and accommodate future needs by increasing the share of public transportation and reducing the dependence on private vehicles.
