International Nurses Day which is celebrated around the world every May 12th is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth, the pioneer of nursing.

The week-long celebrations began with a competition where every nurse from the Welcare Hospital was invited to design a poster or collage depicting their day-to-day experiences. The winner was announced and awarded a DVD player during a cake cutting ceremony held at the Hospital. Each nurse in the Welcare group was presented with a red rose and a nurse's watch in recognition of the contribution they have made, and their dedication and hard work shown towards their patients.

"Nurses Day is an opportunity for us in management to show our appreciation of all our nurses that dedicate long hectic hours to the health and wellbeing of their patients," said Dr. Ottmar Schmidt, Director of Marketing & PR, Welcare World Health Systems. "The aim was also to create a team building interactive activity for all the nurses to enjoy outside the realms of their routine daily tasks. The theme of the week was simply to have fun."

According to a recent study by the World Health Organization the three main sources of stress for nurses regardless of demographic factors are; the organizational structure & climate, the job itself and the managerial role. It is the responsibility of managers to implement the appropriate strategies for coping with employee job stress.

Speaking on behalf of the Welcare nurses, Diana Grobler, Head of Nursing at Welcare Hospital said, "This week has been wonderful. It's very motivational to feel appreciated, especially when we are spending more than 80% of our day at work. Knowing that we have the support and trust of higher management and the hospital is important for us in performing our daily duties."

The International Nurses Day has been celebrated the world over since 1965. It is an occasion to thank the service and hard work of the nursing staff.
