A delegation from the DSS Office is all set to introduce events and activities of the special edition of the 10th Dubai Summer Surprises to the GCC, and for the first time, to the Far East through road shows that will commence on May 21 and go on until June 6. The initiative is part of the ambitious marketing strategy announced by the DSS Office to promote DSS on a global level.

The DSS delegation will accompany the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) officials along with representatives of various travel and tour companies, hotels, hotel apartments, and car rental agencies.

The road shows will highlight the upcoming attractions and festivities being held to celebrate the 10th edition of DSS that will begin on June 21 and end on August 31. The excellent tourism infrastructure in Dubai and the advanced facilities available for travellers will also be promoted during the visits. GCC residents form a major part of the total DSS visitors, and the Far East is being viewed as a market that holds immense potential in terms of visitor arrivals to Dubai. The road shows will target a wider audience from both these regions this year.

Commenting on the launch of the road shows in the GCC, Laila Suhail, Executive Project Director of DSS said, 'The GCC road shows have proved to be a very successful marketing tool in the previous editions. The increasing numbers of GCC visitors is a clear indication that the DSS has become a summer attraction and has contributed in changing travel plans of many tourists in the region making Dubai a leading summer tourist destination.'

Similarly, Khulood Al Thani, Marketing Manager of DSS was optimistic on the success of the inaugural DSS road show to the Far East. 'Our research has shown that the Far East is a vibrant market that holds immense potential in terms of tourism. Along with the state-of-the-art tourist infrastructure of Dubai, we will be highlighting the three main characteristics of Dubai Summer Surprises - an amazing shopping experience, unbelievable prizes, and great family entertainment.'

'DSS will also organize a raffle draw for the media in the Far East where one winner from the four Far East destinations will get the chance to spend three nights and four days in Dubai during DSS with travel and accommodation expenses paid for,' she added.

The first ever DSS road show in the Far East will start on May 21 at the Marriott Singapore, followed by a stop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at the JW Marriott on May 23. On May 25, the DSS delegation will arrive in Thailand at the Conrad Bangkok and on May 28, the JW Marriott at Hong Kong will host the DSS team.

Simultaneously, the GCC road show will kick start at the Movenpick hotel in Kuwait on May 26, moving on to the Marriott in Doha, Qatar, on May 28. The Ritz Carlton in Manama, Bahrain, will be the venue for the last day of the GCC road show on May 30.

The last of the series of road shows will focus entirely on Saudi Arabia, beginning at the Le Gulf Meridien in Al Khobar on June 2, moving on to the Al Faisaliah Hotel in Riyadh on the 4th, and ending at the Inter-continental in Jeddah on June 6.

Launched in 1998, Dubai Summer Surprises was conceived as the foremost family entertainment event during the summer season for the whole of GCC. Targeted at visitors from outside the UAE and within the country, DSS has been a major entertainment and shopping attraction since its inception and witnessed 1,875,000 visitors in the year 2006 compared to 600,000 in 1998. The event has succeeded in positioning Dubai as the leading summer destination in the region.

Organised by government departments with the cooperation of the public sector, the ten-week event is a celebration of different surprises that offer visitors and shoppers the perfect family entertainment opportunity and the ideal combination of shopping and adventure. Over the years DSS has hosted numerous surprises such as Food, Water, Global, Ice, Flower, Sports, Heritage, Arts, Techno, Cartoons, Colour, Sweets, Knowledge, and Back-2-School. The summer event lays special emphasis on children, who are provided all the opportunities to hone their skills while enjoying a fun-packed ten weeks of activities. DSS also has its own mascot, Modhesh, the ever smiling brand ambassador who embodies everything that the event stands for - fun, excitement, brightness and unlimited joy for children.

Dubai Summer Surprises as a venture has contributed significantly to the economy of Dubai and continues to do so by enhancing different economic sectors during a lean period of economic activity in summer. An increase in visitor expenditure from AED 850 million in 1998 to AED 2.57 billion in 2006 is a clear indication of the event's ability to drive economic growth during summer. Into its tenth year, Dubai Summer Surprises has come a long way by building on the successes of the previous editions and aims to create a benchmark for future years to provide the three most important characteristics of the event - shopping, winning, and entertainment.
